“The best ever.”
Amanda erupted in a fit of laughter, and the sound was tied for first place in the best sounds I’d ever heard.
“Yes, all of the above,” she agreed. But there was still a slight hesitancy in her eyes as she looked between us. “You’re both really okay with this? Me not choosing and dating you both… for now?”
Reed and I nodded simultaneously, and she relaxed.
“God, what the fuck have we gotten ourselves into?” she asked.
I leaned in to kiss her, but a knock at the door interrupted us. Instead of kissing the beautiful woman, I groaned and glanced around to make sure all was right in my office. Reed opened the door.
On the other side was Adam, holding a box of straws and napkins.
“Umm… Grady’s looking for you, boss,” he said and then peered behind me. “Also, you may wanna spray some Febreeze or something. Definitely smells like sex in there. Good on you, sis. See you downstairs.”
And then he was gone. I closed the door and turned back around to find a red-faced Amanda hiding behind her hands.
Reed and I both laughed and lowered her hands. “It’s just Adam. He’s not going to say anything for fear of our wrath. He’s also going to see us around more often, so not sure how long we were going to be hiding it anyway,” Reed reasoned.
“Okay, fine. But let’s try to be careful around everyone else until we figure this all out. We don’t need to complicate things prematurely.”
We both agreed, and Amanda headed downstairs. Reed and I followed like we were the cats that got the canary. The grins on our faces easily betrayed what had happened.
Once downstairs, Reed stopped off in the bathroom, so I took our unusual moment alone to turn to Amanda.
“Hey, I’m actually taking Zach to the aquarium tomorrow. Do you want to come with us?”
She wrung her hands in front of her and nervously tucked a few stray pieces of hair behind her ear. “Are you sure? I don’t want to impose on your time together.”
I smoothed my hands down her arms, and she dropped them to her sides. “I’m positive. Ever since we FaceTimed him at the drive-in, he’s been asking about you. I think this week he’s asked me how you were and where you were at least four separate times.”
Every time my son brought her up, my heart further constricted in my chest, knowing he liked her nearly as much as I did.
“Seriously?” she questioned, eyebrows shooting to her hairline.
“Seriously.”
“Well, if he wants me to come, then I’m in no position to tell him no.”
And then she smiled and I couldn’t help but kiss her. It was the thought of the three of us spending time together as well as the knowledge she wanted to go, that really made it impossible to resist the temptation of her mouth.
“That’s the exact opposite of keeping this quiet,” Reed said over the sound of a new karaoke song.
“She’s hard to resist. I know you know that.” Throwing an arm around Amanda’s shoulders, I led us back to the front of the house, but I didn’t miss the ticcing in Reed’s jaw and the flare of jealousy in his eyes.
Too fucking bad.
TWENTY-TWO
Reed
Josh was pissed, but what else was new? He’d been all flared nostrils, scowling glances, and grunted responses since the moment Zach proclaimed that I should also go with them to the aquarium.
Josh’s initial response was to tell Zach that I had things to do that day. Which, to his credit, I did, but all of them could be rescheduled or wait until later.
Zach had been so insistent that Josh could do nothing but concede after nearly twenty minutes of begging and negotiating. I wasn’t much help either. The thought of seeing more of Amanda meant I sided with Zach and agreed that I should go with them.
“I’m not going to forget this,” Josh muttered low enough that Zach, who was skipping in front of us toward Amanda’s apartment, couldn’t hear the annoyance in his voice.
