I cupped her gorgeous face in my hands andbeamedat her. I put as much of my joy out in the world toward her as I could. So it would muscle aside her fears. So she could feel it.

Slowly, she smiled.

“A baby,” she whispered.

“You’re having a baby.”

She laughed, the tears finally falling. I hugged her against me and we laughed together.

“We’re having a baby,” she said and leaned back, her eyes luminous. My hands lifted from her back, to her shoulders.

To her face.

The kiss was between us. In the air and space. It was in my memory and right now.

We’re having a baby. A family. We were a family.

That thought, more than the press of her ass against my dick, gave me a hard on.

This felt like a new beginning.

I leaned down to taste her pink lips. To bring us full circle. To make the moment perfect.

“No,” she said, and put a hand against my chest, pushing herself off my lap. Scrambling to the other side of the truck.

“What?”

“We’re not doing that.”

“Kissing?”

“And the stuff that comes after. I don’t think we should do any of it.”

“Ever?”

“Matt, it’s already complicated enough between us. Three weeks ago we were mortal enemies.”

Mortal enemies who fucked. It seemed to me that kissing would help us figure out what we were, but the glasses were back on and she was buckling herself into her side of the truck.

“We’re going to be a family.”

“No, we’re going to be co-parents. I’ll have my lawyers draft a document.”

It was a stab right to the heart.

“Adocument?”

“Yes. A legally binding document. That will help us figure out how we do this. What did you think was going to happen?”

“Not a fucking document,” I said, starting the truck.

“We need to be practical,” she said. “It will make everything easier.”

I wasn’t going to push. I was still reeling and she was emotional. Not a good time for big conversations. I drove in silence for a while, getting us out of Portland and onto the highway. The ocean was to our right.

“You have all that stuff the doctor was talking about?”

“Pre-natal vitamins?” she asked and then nodded.
