Page 132 of Never Forever

Outside, rain pattered against the windows and thunder rolled across the ocean. The fire crackled and lit Matt’s face with gold and red light.

“What’s the name?” I asked.

“Of our baby? I told you Imogen…”

“Of the storm.”

“They don’t name nor’easters like they do hurricanes.”

“They should,” I said around a mouthful of cheesy pasta and crisp lettuce. “What about Beatrice?”

“You’re talking about the baby, right?”

I nodded.

“Sure, I like that name,” he said. “A kid named Bea, seems like she’d be a nice kid.”

“Smart.”

“Like her mom,” he said. “Beautiful like her mom. Talented and driven like her mom.”

“Stop.”

“Stubborn like her mom.”

Matt leaned forward and got up on his knees so he could throw another piece of wood in the fire. I found myself staring at his butt. It really was a world-class ass.

The muscles in his arm where it was braced against the floor were all clenched. If I was closer and braver, I could take my finger and trace the vein that started in his hand and went up his forearm to his elbow. From there I’d trace the smooth round curve of his bicep and then the hard dip of his triceps and then…

“Carrie, you okay? You’ve got a weird look on your face.”

I wasn’t sure how I felt about my horny face being described as weird.

“I’m fine,” I said, brushing him off. “What are we going to do for fun if we lose power?”

He raised his eyebrows expectantly.

“Not that kind of fun,” I grumbled.

“Hmm. I’ve got an idea if you’re up for it.”

“I’m up for anything,” I said bravely.

Anything that would stop me from thinking how much I still wanted Matt.

No past, no history, no memories.

Just Matt. The man he was now.

To get through this storm, I was going to need some willpower.

“Johnny has his hand!”Matt said.

“Moonstruck,” I supplied. “Too easy. You know it’s one of my favorites.”

“Get to the chopper!”

“It’s Arnold,” I said.
