Declan finishes with the fans and rejoins us, taking Lily’s hand again. “Sorry about that,” he says, a hint of embarrassment in his voice.
I shake my head, smiling. “Don’t be. You’re a star, after all.”
He laughs, kissing my forehead. “Come on, let’s go see the elephants.”
We continue our adventure through the zoo, stopping at the elephant enclosure where Lily’s eyes grow wide with amazement. “They’re so big!”
Declan lifts her up again so she can see better. “They sure are. Did you know elephants can live to be over seventy years old?”
“Wow!” Lily exclaims, clearly impressed.
We spend hours wandering through the zoo, enjoying the animals and each other’s company. Declan gets stopped a few more times for pictures, each time handling it with grace and a smile. I can see how much his fans adore him and it makes me love him even more.
As the day starts to wind down, we make our way to the zoo’s café for some ice cream. Lily’s face lights up as she digs into her chocolate cone, Declan and I sharing a strawberry sundae.
“This has been the best day ever,” Lily declares between bites.
Declan grins, ruffling her hair. “I’m glad you had fun, sweetie.”
I lean into him, feeling content and happy. “Thank you for today, Declan. It’s been perfect.”
He kisses my temple, his arm wrapping around my shoulders. “Anything for you, Millie.”
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Declan
The sun is shining through the kitchen window, casting a warm glow on Lily and I as we stand at the kitchen counter. I’m stirring a bowl of dough, trying to keep my focus on the task at hand, but my thoughts keep drifting to Millie.
Lily’s been asking about Millie a lot lately and I’ve been putting off the conversation. Today, I think it’s time to clear the air.
“Hey, Lily,” I say, trying to sound casual. “Do you remember when we talked about Millie and me?”
She looks up from her task of cracking an egg into a bowl, her eyes wide with curiosity. “Yeah, Daddy?”
“Well,” I start, “Millie and I are kind of dating now. That means we’re...well, together.”
Lily’s face lights up, and she claps her hands. “That’s cool! I like Millie.”
I smile at her enthusiasm. “I’m glad you do.”
Suddenly, she tilts her head, her eyes narrowing with thought. “Is Millie Finn’s girlfriend too?”
I blink, surprised by her question. “Why do you ask that?”
She shrugs, a knowing look in her eyes. “It just seems that way. Is she?”
I chuckle, running a hand through my hair. “It’s a little complicated, but yes, Finn loves Millie too.”
Her face brightens even more. “As long as Millie’s happy, I’m happy.”
I’m touched by her words. “That’s very sweet of you, Lily.”
Just then, the kitchen door swings open and Millie walks in, her face lighting up when she sees us.
“Hey, guys,” she says cheerfully.
I walk over and give her a quick kiss. “Hey. Looks like we weren’t doing such a great job at hiding our relationship.”
