With one more problem solved, I try to find Tess.

After several unanswered calls—because she’d left her phone at home—and asking all the staff about her whereabouts while I search the grounds, I turn to Blanc for help.

“Have you seen Tess?

The dog is basking in the sun but turns around a bit so that I have full access to her belly. I give her a good rub before repeating the question.

Blanc considers the trade fair and leads me to Tess and her brother. At least, she was having her own security this whole time.

“That’s some nice shade you have,” I hum, startling Tess. She was leaning against a tree, surrounded by bushes on one side and guarded by Tipsy on the other.

I sit next to her, wrapping an arm over her shoulder and pulling her close.

Her beautiful auburn curls are moving slightly thanks to the cool breeze, and there are tiny flower petals and leaves stuck in between them.

She is so beautiful, it’s hard to believe she’s real. And she’s mine.

Tess gives me a confused smile but soon realizes where she is.

“I fell asleep— The appointment!”

“We have 20 minutes for the appointment, I’ve already called the doctor, there’s no problem if we're running a bit late.”

“No, Owen, we need to talk first. Macy, she’s going to—”

“She’s not going to do anything because she no longer works here. And she won’t be contacting the media anymore, at least with regard to us. I truly pity the next person that stumbles upon her.”

I get up and help Tess to her feet.

“But we have far more important things to busy ourselves with,” I point out.

“Yes, but I want to tell you what she said. I don’t want you to think—”

“Tess, we discussed this yesterday. The people who know us don’t believe the crap they hear. The same is true for you and me. Besides, I’ve had two angry people—Jed and Adela— storming into my office to let me know that Macy was on a rampage, Marco stopped me at the stairs of the estate to share the exact same story, and even more people were coming to speak to me while I was looking for you. And I was looking for you for almost half an hour, so I spoke with almost all the staff. Every single one of them came to your defense.”

Tess’s eyes fill with tears which she rushes to wipe away.

“Now, love, let’s go. I want to see our baby,” I say and pull her against me, feeling the heat of her body, and the trembling. I kiss her forehead and nose, and each cheek until I get a giggle out of her, and at last her lips.

“So do I,” she says when we part.

We make our way back to the house to change and make sure to lock all four dogs inside. We arrive at the gynecologist almost twenty minutes later.

The doctor greets us warmly but requests to speak with Tess alone first. I’m guessing it’s because she was still shaken by the time we arrived, but I make no effort to stop him. Five minutes later I’m let into the room.

Tess is already positioned with her hand extended to me. I grab it and bring it to my lips for a quick kiss before I sit on the chair next to her.

I can’t really make out what the ultrasound shows, but the doctor seems to take his time looking at the screen.

I don’t know if that’s normal.

“Is everything alright, Dr. Geller?” Tess asks.

So, it’s not normal. Her grip tightens around mine as we both try to lean closer to the screen.

“Everything is perfectly fine, Miss Green, I just have to measure their size,” he says with a smile, his eyes fixed on the screen.

“Their size?” we both say in unison.
