“As soon as I unravel everything, you’ll know.” With that, Levi hung up.
She put her phone back on the charging pad and glanced around the kitchen, unsure what to do next. What she’d assumed was an elaborate ruse to work her out of his system, might turn out to be a real threat.
“You should head back upstairs,” Seth suggested. “Get some sleep. I’ve got this. Plus, Noah will be back in a minute. No one’s going to get past us to you and Jase. Promise.”
And on the off chance that someone did, she shouldn’t leave Jase alone. She almost snorted aloud at how eagerly she leapt on that excuse to hop back into his bed.
“What’s your gut say on this?” she asked instead of commenting on Seth’s suggestion.
He stared at her for a long moment. “I think you should stay as close to Jase Hayes as you can.”
“That sounds like a great idea to me.”
Light flooded the kitchen, and she turned to see Jase standing there, wearing nothing but a soft-looking pair of lounge pants. Since he’d still been naked between the sheets when she’d left him earlier, she knew he’d only pulled them on to come find her.
“I needed to check in on things.”
He glanced pointedly at the clock. “At 3:24 in the morning?”
“Yes, when I’m on the job, I do.”
“I fired you,” he reminded her.
She narrowed her eyes at him. “Fortunately, you’re not the only client we have right now. There are others. Smart people who know better than to fire one of the top security experts in the field.”
He grinned, moving until he had her pinned against the counter. He bent until his lips brushed her ear. “Having you work for me didn’t really work. Not with your rules. Rules I respect, by the way.”
She ignored his comment, noticing Seth had slipped out of the room at some point. She reached for Jase, skimming her fingers along his shoulders. “This is serious, Jase. Levi thinks you could be in real danger.”
He cupped her hip, pulling her against him until she felt the pulse of his erection against her belly. “Then you should stay close. Very…” He nipped along her jaw. “Very…” His tongue painted a trail up to her ear. “Close.” His teeth tugged at her lobe.
“Are you always like this?”
“He’s never like that.”
The intrusion of Noah’s voice startled her for a moment, but her gaze never left Jase’s.
“Never?” she questioned.
“Never. I heard about lunch from Julia. Everything was Gwen this and Gwen that. You do realize he’s never taken a woman to lunch with his mom and sister.”
“Enough, Noah,” Jase reprimanded.
Noah laughed. “And I hear you’re headed to Sunday dinner with the rest of the family.”
“What?” She remembered Jase’s mom asking her something which she’d agreed to. His mom had said she was looking forward to it. Julia had mentioned their dad would be back in town. Then Jase had swept them all out before Gwen could focus too much on it. She should have paid better attention to the conversation, apparently, and less to the man.
“It’s not important,” Jase stated, gaze flicking from hers to Noah’s then back. “I don’t know about you, but I’d like to get a little more sleep. Let’s go back to bed.”
“Do you ever ask?”
Noah laughed once again while Jase looked irritated. “I just asked.”
“Pretty sure there was no question in what you just said.”
“Bed, Gwen,” he growled.
“Still not a question,” she growled back.
