“Which one?” Did I do something wrong? Did I accidentally smack her?
“The left one.”
“Um... Which one?”
“Well... the one on top.”
I look over to that arm. “Ah... Right... Better not annoy the tubes.” I put that arm down and flex the other arms. “I’m very fine!”
She puts her hand on my chest. “Are you sure you’re fine?”
I wink. “I am. Things I can be doing already will wow you.”
“For example?”
I blink. When it comes to that, I can’t seem to come up with something on the go. “Like... I don’t know. What should I be doing to prove that?” The tubes and stuff that are stuck to me are the reason I can’t do much. I can’t even get out of bed without sending the nurses running here. I’ve made enough beings worried about me that I don’t need to add to the list.
She laughs. “You seem clueless enough. Just stay put until your sentenced bed rest is over.”
“But...”
There’s a knock at the door and it opens. There comes a doctor and two nurses.
Winnie stands and nods to them. “Is it time for his examination?”
But I want her to stay for a bit longer.
The doctor says, “It’s time for another round of healing ray while we check up on his progress.”
I guess healing ray is a good thing and checking my progress is also a good thing, so...
Winnie pats my shoulder and my heart almost jumps out of my throat. She is a bit too nice to me. “Okay, take care. I’ll check on you again later, maybe tomorrow. And let me know what you want the kids to do.”
I sigh. I guess it is what it is. “Sure.”
She leaves while all I can do is stare at her back. I want to be with her...
The doctor gestures for the nurses to start working on me. I remain lying on the bed, letting them move my limbs and use the machines on me.
The doctor says, “How are we doing today?”
“Good? My head hurt a bit earlier, but it is feeling better.”
“Your arms?”
I wriggle my fingers. “All is well.”
“The legs?”
I move them, trying to lift them. “They are heavy.”
“I see.” She marks it on her clipboard. “The nurses will start the ray on you. If it hurts a bit too much, just let us know.”
“Okay.”
I’m not a fan of...
They put two blocks of metal on my chest, over my clothes. Those are so cold that even though they aren’t touching my skin, they are freezing me.
