“Callie, just listen. I need to talk to you.”
“Jake, what could you possibly have to say?”
“Baby, I've been trying to find you for days. Where are you? I need you to come home.”
“Jake—”
“Baby, please. I took this time away from you and found a therapist. I’m seeing him twice a week now. I want to be better for you…for us. I want to show you that I know I fucked up. It was a mistake, baby.”
“Sweets, they’re about to start making dessert,” Nick called out.
I covered the microphone the best I could before responding. “Be right there. Give me one minute,” I called back.
Nick promptly went back inside.
“Is that Nick?”
“I need to go. I am in the middle of something.” Ignoring the question, I changed the subject. “This relationship is over, Jake. I'm glad you're getting the help you need, and I hope that goes well for you. I really do.”
He was quiet for a moment. “Callie…are you fucking him? Have you been sleeping with him this whole time?”
“Excuse me! You did not just ask me that.”
“Yes, I fucking did. You always told me I had nothing to worry about. Were you lying to me during this entire relationship?”
I scoffed at him. “Have a glorious life, Jake.”
His voice got less tense, but he was still being a bit crass.
“Callie, hold the fuck on. Where are you? I need to fucking see you. I need to fix this. Let me come see you and apologize properly.”
The conversation was going nowhere. “I’m out-of-town Jake. I will talk to you later.”
“Where? I will come to you.” He sounded like he was pleading now.
The fact that he doesn't even remember we are supposed to be on our honeymoon right now tells so much about the relationship he and I had in itself.
“I will see you in a few weeks. Goodbye, Jake.” I said sadly. I had no intention of seeing him, but I really needed to go.
“Callie plea—” I hung up and shut off my phone.
I walked back in and tried my best not to show how upset I actually was. As far as Nick knows, Jake is blocked, and I haven’t spoken to him in over a month.
“Hey, Sweets,” He pulled me into a hug. “That seemed intense. Do you wanna talk about it?”
I looked up at him with misted eyes. At that moment, I didn’t want to be anywhere else but in his arms. “No, it was just Aubs. She just wanted to tell me something stupid Link did. Then we had a disagreement about something that upset me. Nothing important.”
I felt horrible lying to him, but I couldn't have this conversation right now. His face fell a bit, looking concerned. He leaned down and kissed my lips softly.
“Okay. Let's finish this, then we can head to the beach.”
I looked up at him with admiration. “Sure, I’d like that.”
He wiped something off my nose, then kissed the clean spot.
“What are you doing?" I whispered.
He placed his mouth near my ear. “Everyone is staring. I am making it look good.”
