“Yes, but Nick, you have been puking for an hour. I didn’t realize you were that scared of this. I never would have made it such a big deal. I’m—"
“I am going. I don’t like it, but I’m going.”
I didn’t say another word until we were on the plane.
Once we were seated, the flight attendants got Nick and me some wine.
“Nick, if you plan to take the medicine, you can’t drink that.” He tossed it back like I was going to steal it from him.
“I am a grown man, Callie.”
“Sure… let’s go with that.”
He looked at me like he wanted to strangle me. “Don’t be a bitch right now, please.”
I ignored his comment and reached into my bag to ensure my phone was off. I put on my headphones and started watching the ads on the little TV in front of me.
The flight attendants had just finished their safety mumbo jumbo. Nick made me stay completely still and quiet so he could pay attention to the entire thing. It was kind of charming.
As the plane started taxiing onto the runway, Nick gripped the armrest so tight his knuckles went white. I tried to lift it so it wasn’t between us, and he tried to fight me. When he finally gave in, I leaned into him and held his hand.
“I got you,” I whispered. “You are going to be just fine. I promise.”
He looked at me out of the side of his eye and nodded.
Once the wheels left the ground, he gripped my hand harder than before and shut his eyes. He wouldn’t let me go, even once the plane was coasting. I ordered another mini bottle of wine for us both. Before I could even open mine, his was gone.
We were quiet for about thirty minutes, but I wanted to break the silence.
“You didn’t take the medicine,” I stated.
When he responded, he didn’t look at me, but I saw him smirk. “You told me not to.”
I hugged his arm and leaned on his shoulder. “I’m glad you’re here.”
I felt his lips kiss the top of my head. “Me too, Sweets.”
He passed out about ten minutes later and never let my hand go.
Chapter nine
Nick
Iwas awoken by my head falling forward and Callie rubbing my arm. It felt so calming. For a second, I forgot where I was.
“We’re here,” she whispered.
My eyes shot open when I realized we were still on the plane. She winced when I squeezed her hand. I immediately let go, I hadn’t realized how hard I was holding her.
“Hey, hey. It’s okay. We’re here; you’re safe.”
I looked at her and then out the window. I slept through the entire flight.
“How...how did I sleep through it?” I asked.
She smiled. “It was a really easy flight. It was probably the best one I've ever been on.”
“We made it?” It came out like a question. I think I was in a bit of a shock.
