“Surely you have medical staff.” Panic seized my chest.

“Come with me.” The Angeliminir offered his hand. “I can carry you both.”

“Wait. What about the other two?”

“We’re going to ambush the Roulex when they come to collect this vessel.” The dark-haired one grinned. “I need the distraction of a good fight.”

“Hurry,” said the warrior with my dad draped over his arm. “I will take you and your father to safety.”

I stared at my dad’s unconscious form. If I didn’t go with him, I might never see him again. I might not live through the night. But he would be safer with Axton’s people than with me right now. He’d want me to go. He’d told me to live my life. I thought, if they met, Axton and my dad would like each other. And I had to try and free Axton. I’d never be able to live with myself if I didn’t.

“Tell my dad that I love him very much.” I squared my shoulders even though I was weeping on the inside. “But I’m staying. I want to help get Axton back.”
