“That was before,” the Roulex snapped.

The guard yanked me deeper into the room.

“No, please.” I wrestled with the guard holding me and two more Roulex dashed inside to press me onto the gurney while they locked me in place with the heavy chains. “I don’t want this. Stop. This is a mistake.”

“The only mistake here,” the Roulex leaned over me, her breath smelled like a cross between cigars and vinegar, “is that you failed in your mission.”

“I’m sorry. Why are you doing this?” I breathed out, trying not to cry or scream. They said they’d help me, protect me. “He was more intense than you explained.”

“Which is why we offered you so much money.” Her yellowish eyes narrowed. “And you’ve not delivered on your promise.”

“What Axton said makes sense. You’re torturing people here, aren’t you?” All this time I thought he’d been crazy, but he’d been telling me the truth. I was the fool here believing their lies.

“He told you his name?” she chirruped and made clicking sounds to the guards in the room.

A cold numbness snaked through me.

“What else did he tell you, human?”

“Nothing.” I clamped my mouth closed, because apparently, the Roulex hadn’t known his name in all the time he’d been in here. Knowing that he trusted me with that was like a blade stabbing me in the heart. And I’d betrayed him. Lied to him. I couldn’t go back there. Even if he didn’t rip me apart, just seeing the hurt in his golden gaze would undo me.

The Roulex snarled and yanked my head back. “What did he tell you?”

But I didn’t answer her.

She slammed my head down on the gurney and the whole metal bed rattled beneath me. “Have you forgotten our bargain? I have soldiers outside your father’s home right now that I can bring him here. Would you like that? To see us strip his flesh and muscles until nothing is left but his bones?”

“Please.” I blinked back tears. I’d come here agreeing to get pregnant for my dad’s robotic organ transplants. He would die without them and I couldn’t afford them in ten lifetimes. I had to get the money the Roulex promised. “There has to be something else I can do for you. Another prisoner or—”

“No,” she roared. “Axton is the only one left. Get him to mate with you or else!”

He had something they wanted badly, and they’d do anything to get it, even hurt my dad who was innocent in all of this. He’d thought I was at a new alien medical school that paid for our cost of living. What would he say when he found out the truth? And that I was helping an alien race in whatever grand scheme they had going on with Axton and his people. “So what Axton told me was true. You are monsters.”

She snorted, her green scales darkening. “Doesn’t matter what he or you think, we will write history as we see fit. Annihilate the weak and use the strong to our advantage.”

With her nod, the guards held down my arm. I thrashed around because whatever they planned had to be bad since I was already chained to the gurney.

A flash of metal caught the light and I sucked in a strangled breath. The needle was longer than my hand. “What is that for?”

“To ensure your compliance.” The Roulex pushed a vial into the base of the shot and a suction sounded. “This will ensure that you are more than eager to have sex with Axton.”

“I can’t go back in there, he’ll kill me.” Probably not entirely true. And she didn’t need anything to make her want Axton. His brooding sexiness had done enough. She’d practically thrown herself at him after reaching orgasm because she’d wanted to please him too. Wanted to see if his golden eyes shifted darker or lighter when he came. “Don’t give me that, please.”

The Roulex chuckled. “A warning, human, fuck the winged alien and we’ll ignore your trespass of failing to adhere to our agreement.”

She jabbed the needle into my arm, and I hissed out a scream. The freaking thing hurt like she’d jammed a blade into my flesh.

“And you and your father will live out a long, happy life together.”

The liquid medicine iced through my veins, chilling me. My teeth started to chatter.

“Until you do, we’ll keep giving you these shots every day.” She pulled the needle out. “You have one week to get your Axton to impregnate you or we kill your father.”

“I can’t guarantee that I’ll get pregnant that fast.” My whole face heated at the idea of having sex with Axton multiple times a day to even get close to that. “I’m not even ovulating.”

“You will be soon.” The Roulex smirked, but it looked like a scaled grimace.

“What did you give me?” I shook my head. Tightness clawed up my throat.
