Flashes behind my eyes woke me. Another typical storm was raging outside.

Jody whimpered, curling in on herself like she’d done most nights here when she wasn’t doing the cute whistle-snoring thing she usually did. I’d gotten used to the sounds and they made me smile whenever I woke in the dead of night.

They told me she was here with me and that she was alive. The thought of her hurt or in pain sent an icy spear into my chest.

Now, she was having another nightmare. I’d intended to wake her up enough to help.

“Jody, you’re dreaming.”

But she didn’t stop, and a sob tore from her throat.

Carefully, I laid down beside her, wrapping my arms and wings around her to comfort her. When she was fully back asleep and her night-terror had passed, I’d move back to my side of the cell.

Her skin was cold, and I drew her to me closer. She mumbled words I couldn’t understand, snuggling deeper into my embrace. Her breasts pressed against my chest. My cock twitched sensing a female so close.

This was a fucking bad idea.

I moved to break away from her, but she looped her arms around my neck. Her sigh merged into soft snores crippled my resolve.

Let her sleep. Tomorrow would come soon enough. Besides, the Roulex spying on us would think that we were bonding. They might back off on the tortures and I could regain more of my strength. Break me and Jody out when the time was right.

Then I would repay all the Roulex I could for what they did to Celica. I squeezed my eyes shut as pain deeper than any blade could reach stabbed me. My sister had been a kind soul, given to laughter easily. Her bright amethyst eyes were always seeking fun and the sea. She’d been so broken when the Roulex had come and we were forced under the protective dome over our mountain home. Still, she never should have been allowed to leave, no matter how safe it had seemed at the time.

I would rip my brother-in-law’s heart out for the part he played in getting us all stuck. He should’ve told my sister no. He should’ve protected her, no matter the cost. Her death was on his soul as much as mine and the Roulex. He would pay no matter what I had to do to reach him. No matter the cost.

Jody let out a painful moan, and I loosened my hold on her. Thinking about Knox or my sister wasn’t a good idea right now.

Neither was inhaling too deeply of Jody’s intoxicating scent, especially since I wanted to kiss her awake and bury myself inside her. Give in to the lust pulsing through my veins. I was playing with fire being this close to her. I should’ve known better than not to get involved, to offer any comfort in this place. It would take whatever was good and twist it until the double-edged blade rent a heart in two.

I didn’t deserve any glimmer of peace. I’d failed my sister, but I wouldn’t fail Jody. I’d get her out of here—hell, I’d get us both out. And I’d coat the stones of this place in Roulex blood.
