Chapter 33

Levx

The spaceship tore from the docking bay with a blast of sparks. Levx prayed that Megan and the others would be safe. Why would the Tryns only have one escape vessel unless…unless most of them occupied the other spacecrafts.

If the Tryns were scattered through Earth but had narrowed down the fact that the Renjerians had settled in the Northeast section of the United States, then they could scope out the area using multiple ships. Their cloaking devices would shield them from human eyes and radar.

Levx turned to the others around him. “Gather whatever you can find as weapons. We’ll kill the enemy and take over their ship.” Use their own system against them and locate the smaller spaceships and destroy them.

When a metal clank sounded in the corner, the hair on the back of his neck stood on end. He picked up a lead pipe and moved closer to the pile of boxes.

Her scent alerted him before he saw her. “Megan?”

She stood, hair a tangled mess with a sheepish smile on her face.

“You’re supposed to be with the boys…safe.” When would the stubborn woman listen to him? She was expecting. Did she not know how special that was? How amazing she was to even be able to carry a Renjerian child when even some of his own when could not anymore? And that she’d gone through this scary experience and still wanted to have anything to do with him amazed him.

“Sorry. I just couldn’t leave without you.” She lifted her chin and a fire blazed in her eyes that belied her apology. “It’s not fair that all of us couldn’t leave together but I’m not going to leave you behind not knowing if I’d ever see you again.”

“It’s too dangerous here.” Not that he could do anything about it. Unless they got to the teleport room, which in most ships was near the heart of the control room and heavily guarded, she was stuck with them.

She punched a finger into his chest. “Do you have any idea what I’ve been through? How crushing it was not to know if you were alive or dead or what had happened to you? I won’t go through that again. Ever.”

Drawing her to him, he kissed her softly. “If we get out of this alive, I will never leave you again.”

“Promise?” She smiled up at him with a wicked grin.

Before he could answer, shouts from behind them echoed. “There they are! Get them!”

He pulled Megan behind him, tightening his grip on the metal pipe. His dragon, which had been injured in the woods before he rescued Megan and Alice from the burning cafe, was gone. He felt the hollowness of its absence inside his soul. Like an ever-present void pulsed in him, that would never be filled again.

How many days had it taken for the Tryns to rip his dragon from him? Endless hours of torture and drugs so that he didn’t even feel traces of his true form anymore. The loss of it staggered him. And if he lost Megan too…he wouldn’t be able to survive. Her voice and touch had brought him from the brink of despair but he would never find his way back again if something happened to her or their baby.

What had these vile Tryns done to her that she appeared six months pregnant? Sure he’d lost time but doubtful they’d have kept him and the others alive that long.

“Stay behind me. Anything happens, then you run like hell and don’t stop. Find the teleportation room and get yourself back to Earth. My people will protect you.” Of course, they would now because she was pregnant. Why couldn’t his dad have listened to him before when she was only a human. That it didn’t matter if she ever carried a Renjerian or not, she was his heart, his soul, she completed him like no one else could. They should’ve protected her from the beginning, then triplets wouldn’t have been captured.

Trans spilled into the landing bay. Eight huge ones and dozens more of their pesky smaller versions that had venomous bites.

Vorlmex, a Renjerian nearest to the enemy swung his fist, but the Tryn dodged and grabbed his arm, twisting it behind him. Another kicked Vorlmex in the ribs again and again.

Taking a step forward, Levx raised his weapon. He would die before he let one of these filthy creatures touch her. The nearest Tryn whistled and dozens of pint-size ones crept forward. Levx chunked one of the empty boxes at the beast. The monster bellowed, clutching its arm.

“There’s too many of them.” Megan backed up, pulling on him. “We have to get out of here.”

“Nowhere to go.”

Another Tryn leaped onto Megan’s back. Fury boiled in Levx’s veins and his heart stuttered. Before it sank its poisonous teeth into her flesh, Levx knocked it off her with the pipe.

“Come on, we have to find a way to get you out.” He tugged her to his side.

She screamed and was wrenched away from him. A demon larger than he’d ever seen held her by the back of her neck. Her feet dangled in the air as she kicked and twisted to try and get away.

“The little mouse ran away but the Tryn caught her.” It grinned. “She will make a tasty prize after the larva have been implanted.”

“Let go of me, bastard!” Her hands glowed but he kept her from touching him by throwing her against the landing bay’s doors.

“Megan!” His anger spun to rage. Levx let out a roar that was more Renjerian than human. His heart froze as her body slumped to the ground. Diving forward, he plowed into the Tryn’s gut, taking them both to the ground. His dragon, the one he’d thought was gone forever, raged forward. Maimed but there. With Megan a safe distance away, he blasted fire at the Tryn, not stopping until the beast was hot ash beneath him.
