Nausea threatened him. He couldn’t lose his daughter.
“What about Hailey and Sara?” Trey asked.
“I don’t know. They’re not answering,” he said softly.
Trey felt like he was going to come unglued, “Damn it, Gavin!”
Anger consumed him, though, he knew it was actually fear. Fear he would never see his daughter again or that he could lose the love of his life. Fear they would never be able to finally be a family. Fear he wouldn’t be able to save them.
Trey took a few seconds to calm himself down. “Meet me at the station.” Trey hung up and as he placed his phone in the cupholder, it began ringing and he snatched it up.
Relief flooded over him when he saw Hailey’s name on the screen. “Hailey, where are you?”
“He has her, Trey! He has Trinity,” she sobbed.
“I know, Baby, I know. Where are you?”
“He told me to go to the cabin in the woods on my father’s property. He told me to come alone, or he would kill her.”
She was nearly hyperventilating. He could vaguely make out what he thought was Sara’s voice as she tried to calm her sister, but Hailey wasn’t listening. He desperately needed her to calm down or she wouldn’t be able to tell him anything useful. “I know you’re scared; I am too. But I need you to stay where you are. I’m coming to get you. Whose car are you in? And is Sara with you? Gavin can’t get a hold of her.”
“Ryan told me there was a car in the parking garage for me. I think it’s Hannah's. Her wallet and keys were in here. And Sara’s with me but her phone is dead.”
After what he’d just found, he wasn’t surprised Hannah was involved.
“Hailey, it's too dangerous. Please go somewhere safe.”
“I can’t! He will kill her! We both know he will,” she pleaded.
Trey could hear the hysteria creeping in behind Hailey’s words. He wanted to tell her to wait for him and to stay away, but he knew it was pointless. She wasn’t going to listen; she was going to save their little girl.
His heart broke, as he realized the impending doom that awaited him. If Hailey complied, Trey would lose everything. Ryan and Hannah would kill her and Trinity. What he loved most in this world was about to be ripped away from him and he found himself wanting to cry out in rage.
He just hoped he could save them in time.
“Hailey, please be careful.”
She tried to respond but static took over her words and the call was dropped.
He cursed, but his phone buzzed again, and he quickly answered, hoping it was Hailey.
“Chief, it’s Libby. I have the lab results from the hair found in Nicole’s car.”
“Did you get a name?”
“Allison Duval. I texted you a photo of her. And, get this, it was linked to a double-homicide cold case. A couple was killed in 1994. Their daughter was the prime suspect and she’s been missing for the last seventeen years.”
Allison Duval? Who the hell was she?
Trey opened the text to look at the photo of the woman who had been wreaking havoc on his family. His chest constricted.
Trey knew exactly who Allison was.
Except that wasn’t her name at all.
