She tried to calm the wave of anxiety that washed over her. This was what she wanted after all, but she felt as if she was set for a race that she hadn’t properly trained for.
“I think your father is right.”
Her eyes shot up to Avery. “You do?”
“I feel confident having you as my luna.”
“But I’m a baby.”
“And you won’t grow if you’re coddled all the time, aren’t I right?”
She thought about their words and saw her father’s proud and, yet tired, eyes resting on her. He was ready to let someone else take the lead, but he wouldn’t do so if he didn’t believe she was ready. Otherwise, he would’ve given Kent the pack a long time ago.
“Okay.”
“Wonderful. Now, I would suggest having the official luna ceremony in six, maybe seven months. That will give us enough time to transition the pack and plan ahead without your mother losing her mind.”
“We might have to merge both luna and alpha ceremonies and make it unique,” Avery suggested.
“Although it’ll be unique to you, I would still suggest you invite the other packs as soon as we set a date.”
Though it made her nervous, Kendra could sense an opportunity as well. The path ahead of her was slowly forming and she could see her goal on the horizon.
A few days later, she knocked on Jenevea’s door with a glass dish in her hands. Though Kent did all he could to deny and avoid Jenevea, Kendra had made it her mission to welcome her into the family and introduce her to the pack.
Jenevea greeted her with a gentle smile. “Come in.”
“I’m late, I know.”
“Mike and Lina only just arrived too.”
Kendra had encouraged Lina and Jenevea to meet with each other a few days after she’d arrived, in the hopes they could help one another throughout pregnancy and motherhood.
“Oh, good. Then I don’t seem as tardy as I am,” Kendra giggled as stepped into the house.
“What an honour to see you here,” Mike joked and pulled her into a hug. “How is the busiest woman of the pack?”
“Why does it sound like you’re trying to make fun of me?”
“Don’t listen to him, Kendra. He’s just jealous,” Lina chimed in. “Is that noodle salad I see in your wonderful hands?”
“It is. I made it just for you, knowing how much you and baby love it right now.”
“We might need some in reserve unless you want to be woken up in the middle of the night by this hungry puppy growing machine.”
Lina gave Mike a not so soft bump with her fist. “Mike!”
“Maybe we should sit before everyone turns violent,” Jenevea giggled and led Kendra to the table.
“I thought I could go take you out shopping soon,” Kendra suggested to Jenevea as everyone filled their plates.
“You don’t have to.”
Jenevea was still very shy, especially when it came to her pregnancy. Kent ignoring her and casting her out was not helping either. Although most of the pack was sweet and welcoming, she still didn’t feel very comfortable.
“I want to, but if you don’t feel comfortable, I’m not going to drag you with me.”
She nodded and Mike quickly changed the topic by trying to steal Kendra’s recipes so he could cook for Lina–or at least try. Kendra enjoyed the laid-back evening. Most of her days she buried herself in work, trying to ignore the void in her heart. Ryker was always on her mind. Not knowing how he was doing or if he’d been able to keep his title was one of the worst things. In the little time she’d spent with him, she’d been able to sense that he was a very proud, hardworking man. His title being stripped from him seemed like it would be his worst nightmare.
