Lina greeted her with a hug. “Mike said we should take our time, but if we eat at the mall, we have to bring him something back.”
“I think he’s secretly hoping for a burger and fries,” Kendra laughed and grabbed the key to the truck. “How are you feeling anyway? Is the morning sickness slowly fading?”
“Oh, I wish someone would’ve told me it’s not just in the mornings but yes, it’s slowly getting better. Wanda gave me a few remedies and they really helped.”
Wanda was the midwife of the pack, and a sweet, elderly lady.
Kendra started the engine and slowly rolled out of the garage. “Well, let me know if anything triggers it.”
It took them about an hour to get to the closest mall. And as always the second Kendra set foot into human crowds, she felt out of place. It wasn’t that she stood out, but it just felt… odd. A pack always stuck together, everyone willing to help each other out. No one went without food, nor a home to sleep. The pack was only as strong as their weakest member and that member wouldn't be shamed for their weakness. Humans were different, and often only cared for themselves.
Lina hooked her arm in hers. ‘I always forget that we live in our sweet little bubble.’
Kendra led Lina to a small baby boutique. ‘I do too.’
Secretly, Kendra’s wolf agreed too but thankfully stayed quiet. After a few moments, Lina warmed up to the idea of letting Kendra spoil her and the baby and they started to pick out some gender neutral things for the little puppy.
They wandered through the mall slowly, making sure to take time to give Lina breaks. Kendra really enjoyed the distraction and loved how her wolf watched through her eyes. The food court triggered Lina’s morning sickness, so they chose to stop at a drive through on the way home.
It was a quiet ride back, though they found themselves sitting in a bit of traffic.
“Kendra, may I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Is Mike hiding something from me?”
Her question hit hard, guilt immediately spreading through her soul. “I may or may not have asked him to keep something I told him a secret. I didn’t want you to get in trouble. If that makes you uncomfortable, I can tell you.”
“No, I just wasn’t sure if it was something about us.”
“It’s not. He just found something out about me and I’m just not ready to share it.”
“I understand. I didn’t mean to intrude.”
“You never intrude and I’m sorry I worried you.”
“Oh, I could’ve asked him too, but I wasn’t sure if I was making it up. It isn’t that he was actively lying or keeping it from me. It’s just a hunch, you know?”
“If there was ever something he would be keeping from you it would likely be that I beat him up–that would be too embarrassing to share.”
That made Lina giggle and she happily continued to munch on her dinner.
As they arrived at the gates of the pack property, Kendra saw a crowd gathering before it. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Lina tense. As their car lights lit up the scene, Kendra saw Kent and a few other warriors surrounding a blonde woman who was kneeling before him. Kendra parked the car and opened the door.
“Stay here. I’ll be right back.”
“Kendra, please don’t get yourself in trouble.”
Kendra gave her a quick nod before closing the door behind her and approaching to the crowd.
“Please, you can’t send me away. I have nowhere else to go,” the woman sobbed, still kneeling on the dirt road.
“I told you that’s not my fucking problem,” Kent spat at her. Looking up, his eyes met Kendra’s. “Fuck off.”
Her wolf growled, dangerously close to the edge of her mind. “No.”
“Turn around and fuck off,” he commanded again. Though he wasn’t the true alpha heir, Kent had her father’s alpha blood and could command anyone—except for Kendra. She outranked him.
