I don’t miss the way Candie smiles at the possible idea that Miles might be having girl trouble.
My attention is drawn to my phone vibrating in my pocket. When I pull it out, I see a message from Jaylen.
Jaylen: I’m going to talk to Miles after the game.
It’s clear he’s still pissed about what happened.
Evie: Maybe I’ll talk to him first since I
haven’t had a chance to discuss the situation yet.
Sorry for putting you in the middle of this.
Jaylen: It’s not your fault, little angel. I chose this.
I chose you. I can handle your brother.
My heart swells reading his words. It still hasn’t sunk in whatever is happening with Jaylen. I just want to take one step at a time and enjoy each moment because who knows what could happen tomorrow or the next day. I can’t take anything for granted.
But I don’t know what to do about my brother. I’m at a crossroads. I know I need to go comfort him and see if everything is okay, but deep down, I know he’ll just continue to be his overprotective self until he feels that there is one hundred percent nothing going on between Jaylen and me. I hate that I have to keep something like this from him because all I want is for him to be happy for me, but he’s not going to be happy when he learns that I’ve been hooking up with his best friend.
I’m going to keep it from him as long as I can because if he’s acting like this over something so innocent as accepting a ride home, then he’s going to lose his fucking mind when he learns the full truth. In a perfect world, I would make sure that doesn’t happen, but this is real life, and reality likes to kick me in the ass whenever it can.
When I don’t text back right away, another text from Jaylen pops up.
Jaylen: Can I see you after the game?
Evie: Where should we meet?
“Ev, do you want another drink?” Jaycee asks as she and Candie stand from their seats.
I nod but don’t look up at them. “Yes, please.”
They leave to grab more drinks, and Rylee joins them to go to the bathroom.
Jaylen: By the exit to the hallway I sent you to
with my cum dripping down your thighs.
My eyes widen at his words, and I slam the screen against my chest, thankful the girls aren’t sitting beside me. If they had looked over my shoulder and read that… my cheeks burn feverishly as I type a response.
Evie: Okay, enough with the dirty mouth.
I’ll see you after the game. Good luck!
As I slip my phone into my side bag, my skin is flushed despite the cool temperature. The sun has fully set, bringing out the twinkling stars overhead. It’s a perfect fall night for a tense game of soccer. I can only hope that Miles pulls his head in before he steps back out onto the pitch.
Moments later, the girls return with more drinks just as the teams run out onto the pitch. We cheer along with the rest of the crowd as the whistle blows for the start of the second half. The Raiders need to get their shit together if they want to make the finals. I would be sad if they were to fall now after the great season they’ve had.
I don’t know what happened in the locker room during the halftime break, but Miles is no longer glaring at Jaylen and is actually keeping an eye on the ball, allowing Jaylen to score a goal with his assist not even five minutes into the second half.
A loud cheer escapes my lips as I jump up and down with the girls. The Raiders are making a comeback, thank God. With the score at 2-2, they need to get ahead to avoid extra time or even a penalty shoot-out if there is no outcome from that.
As the seconds and minutes tick by, I grab Rylee’s hand, holding onto it for dear life. There are two minutes left in extra time and the score is still tied. I can tell both teams are frantic to get a goal to win the game. Jaylen hasn’t been able to get another goal because the keeper has saved them or it wasn’t quite on target. The same goes for the Jets.
It’s been a tense half, to say the least.
When Preston gets the ball and kicks it down to Ethan, the crowd gets to their feet in anticipation of what is going to happen next. I hold my breath when Ethan passes the ball to Miles and he makes a run for the goal. Side-stepping a Jets player, he kicks the ball to Jaylen who headbutts the ball with such force that it glides past the keeper's hand to sink into the back of the net in the top left corner.
