He chuckles and plays with one of the wet braids hanging over my shoulder. “I like this better.”
“Evie!”
My heart stutters in my chest at the sound of Rylee’s voice sounding through the air. I snap my head toward the house and spot her frame walking around the backyard through the trees.
Shit.
“I really should go—”
I’m cut off by Jaylen’s lips slamming down on mine, swallowing my words. I groan into the kiss as it deepens. His cold tongue laps against mine, making my knees almost buckle beneath me. But just as quick as his lips attached to mine, they were gone. “I’ll see you soon, little angel,” he breathes against my lips.
Before I can respond, his body is no longer in front of me, leaving me cold and empty. I look around, unable to see where he went. Damn him and his vampire speed.
“Evie, are you out there?”
As I turn to walk back to the house, I spot the Ghostface mask on the ground and smile. I scoop it up into my hands and rush through the trees to where Rylee stands in the backyard, still calling my name.
When I emerge from the treeline, I make eye contact with her. Rylee’s shoulders sag in relief, her once perfectly styled blonde hair now a sopping mess around her face. I feel guilty that she was so worried about me that she ruined her outfit just to look for me.
“Hey, I’m here,” I say when I reach her, my breathing heavy.
“Where the hell were you?” she demands and looks past me at the dark woods. “I thought you were lost, or worse.”
I know what she wanted to say but the word got caught in her throat.
Dead. She thought I could have been dead.
“I just went for a walk,” I say, reaching up to push the wet hair out of my face. “Let’s go back inside and get warm. Sorry you ruined your outfit looking for me.”
Rylee sighs and steps forward to wrap me in a tight hug, not questioning my poor excuse. “I’m just glad you’re okay.” When we pull away, she points at the mask in my hand. “Where did you get that?”
I look down at it and smile. “Oh, I just found it.”
We turn to walk to the deck steps, our arms linked. Rylee sighs. “Don’t tell anyone this, but I had the biggest crush on Billy Loomis. He was so sexy in Scream.”
I chew my bottom lip, remembering how my heart raced when I saw Jaylen in the mask. “Yeah, me too.”

Evie
“Come on, Candie, we need to leave now or we’re going to be late.”
I watch as Candie races down the staircase, her hair flying behind her with the speed at which she is running while she clutches her handbag to her chest. Her eyes meet mine when she reaches me standing in the foyer by the front door, my hand on the doorknob ready to go.
“Sorry, I had a nap this afternoon so I was running late putting my make-up on,” she says breathlessly.
I pat her on the shoulder and pull the door open, gesturing for her, Rylee, and Jaycee to walk ahead of me. “That’s okay. We’ve all been there.”
“Some more than others,” Jaycee teases as she nudges Candie playfully. “And we’re not going to be late. Evie is just paranoid about not being ten minutes early to the game.”
“Hey,” I protest as we walk toward the taxi waiting for us. We could walk, but the girls want to go for drinks after the game, so this is an easier option. “It’s not a crime to want to be early to an event. The thought of being late gives me the shakes.”
“It’s okay,” Rylee says, linking her arm through mine as we walk down the steps to the driveway. “We love your little quirks.”
I roll my eyes. “Okay, enough. Just get in the car you lot.”
The four of us get into the taxi, making sure to greet the driver with a smile as we direct him to the stadium on campus. The last time I was at the stadium was when Jaylen slide tackled Kale so hard he snapped his ankle and also fucked me so hard in the locker room shower I swear I saw stars and forgot my name. It was an intense night, to say the least.
