Alex sighed like he was exhausted. “Man you’re utterly hopeless, you know that don’t you?”
“Fine,” I growled and turned on my heels to keep pacing. “She’s hot as fuck with long blond hair and curves that just make you want to reach out and fucking touch her! Is that what you want to hear?”
Alex howled with laughter. “That’s what I’m talking about! So she’s hot and she’s gonna be living with you, what is the problem exactly?”
“The problem,” I whispered and continued to pace, “is that she is like a real life fucking cheerleader. Always so happy and upbeat. Look up chipper in the dictionary, and her face will be right there with pompons. What the hell is there to be so chipper about?”
Instead of answering my question, Alex just chuckled. It was annoying.
“What the hell is so funny?”
“You!” He laughed again, this time so loud I started feeling embarrassed. “You like her,” he accused.
“I do not,” I shook my head even though he couldn’t see me and stopped pacing. “I don’t even know her to like or dislike her, and it doesn’t matter how I feel, as long as Lena likes her.” That’s what I kept telling myself, and I would keep on telling myself that until it became true.
“Maybe you don’t know her all that well, but I’ve known you long enough to know that you definitely like her.” His smug voice grated on my nerves, but he did know me well to be honest.
“Whatever,” I growled. “She’s annoying, but more importantly, she’s here to look after Lena, not me.” The fact that I spent too much of last night thinking of ways she could look after me was my business and mine alone.
“Well if you’re not interested, tell me more about this sexy little Mary Poppins, because I might be interested. I know how to handle a woman with a smart mouth.” I cringed at the thought of Alex, playboy extraordinaire, seducing my nanny. Lena’s nanny that is.
“She’s not your type,” I growled. “Trust me.”
“Just because you find me hideous and undatable doesn’t mean all men will, Mr. Rush. And I’ll thank you not to talk smack about me to your friends.”
Shit. I turned slowly, the sound of Alex’s laughter ranging in my ears, until my gaze landed on Lucy’s blue eyes. “Lucy.”
“Oh shit brother, you’re in trouble now,” Alex said around loud, guffawing laughter.
“Shut up, Alex.”
“Don’t be mad at me. Just tell her that you want her and can’t think straight. Women love that shit.”
“Shut. Up.” I growled into the phone while Lucy watched with narrowed eyes and barely concealed laughter on her lips. Lush, full lips. “Lucy,” I began again.
Before I could utter even two words, she held up a hand to stop me, a sweet smile on her face. “I just came to let you know that Lena and I are going to the children’s history museum. They have an exhibit on royals. That’s all.” One brow arched, daring me to say anything unrelated to the museum.
“Lena will love that. Take the Escalade.”
For the first time there was a flash of temper in her eyes, but ever the professional, she banked it quickly and hit me with an icy stare. “That was part of the agreed upon job conditions,” she offered sarcastically, girl next door smile still in place.
“Lucy,” I began again and took a step forward.
The stubborn woman twirled on her heels and gave me her back instead of a moment of her time. “Lena, are you ready to go see princesses?”
“Yay! And queens?”
“And queens,” she responded with a smile. “Let’s hop into our carriage Princess!”
The sound of Lena’s sweet giggles was the last thing I heard, but when I pressed my face against the window, there they were, hand in hand as they skipped across the driveway and into the pearl white Escalade.
“Dammit Alex,” I growled. “You made me piss off the nanny.”
“The good news is that I have a few ideas how you can make her feel better.”
My only response was a low growl, because Alex didn’t understand. “When you have kids you’ll understand.” The last thing I wanted was for the nanny to quit because I pissed her off.
