“You’re not helping.”
“I am. You just don’t like the way my help is delivered.” He let those words settle before he spoke again. “Lucy isn’t Bethany. Lucy takes care of kids for a living, which means she’s unlikely to up and decide she doesn’t want motherhood. And she already said she loves you so what’s the problem?”
“She’s young. Feelings change.”
“And you’re old. Feelings still change. What the fuck does that even mean?”
I sighed. “It means she might want me now, but she’s young and I don’t want to get my heart broken again.”
“Bullshit. Your heart wasn’t broken when Bethany left, your ego was bruised, which is damn hard to do for an ego that size,” he laughed. “You liked Bethany and the image of you two together, it was never love. This is different, it’s why you’re so terrified.”
“You’re right.” The moment the words left his mouth, I knew they were true. I hadn’t even been nervous on my wedding day, because marrying Bethany was the right move. “So, what do I do?”
“That’s easy,” Alex said confidently. “You have to go big.”
“Big. Like a big diamond?”
“No,” he laughed. “Although that might work too, but Lucy isn’t really that kind of woman, is she?”
“No,” I confirmed.
“Didn’t think so. I mean you need to make a big show of telling her you love her. If you can’t do that, be prepared for some other man to snatch her up. Women like that don’t stay single long, Dante.”
Just the idea of another man being in Lucy’s life and having the right to touch her made my hands clench in anger. It was a repulsive thought, one I couldn’t tolerate.
“She’s mine,” I growled.
“Then go get her.”
I stood and looked around the room, for what, I had no idea. “I will.”
“Excellent. I would love to help, but I need to shave a few milliseconds off my forty. These fucking new kids coming up move like lightning.” His tone was playful but I knew it was the truth.
“Want me to create some super light gear for you?”
“Fuck you,” he laughed. “But I don’t not want you to create exactly that.”
We shared a laugh. “I’ll talk to R&D and you go practice. Thanks for listening, Alex.”
“Always. I expect to be Best Man, so don’t fuck it up.” He laughed again before the line went quiet. “Good luck, Dante.”
“Thanks. Back at you.” I ended the call with a renewed sense of purpose.
I loved Lucy, I knew that much, which meant I needed to come up with a way to not just tell her, but to ask her to stay with me and Lena.
Forever.
Epilogue ~ Lucy
Six Months Later
“Dante,” I moan, arching into the touch of his lips against my breast as the sun streaked across the sky just outside our bedroom window. His mouth is doing delicious things to me, starting with my breasts. His tongue swirls around my nipple in concentric, drugging circles before he tugs on my nipple with a groan. “Yes, Dante.”
He took my breast in his mouth as my legs wrapped around his big, strong body and my fingers speared through his hair. He groaned and switched breasts before he released me with a pop. “Lucy, babe. I can’t get enough of you.”
His grunted words tugged a smile across my face and I licked my lips, accepting the loving swipes of his lips, the gentle tug of his mouth on my flesh.
“You don’t have to,” I moaned and held him close. “I want you. I always want you.” It was the truth. Six months in and we couldn’t get enough of each other, couldn’t stop touching each other. If I had a free moment then I wanted to spend it with Dante. If he wasn’t around, I counted down the moments until he was around.
