“The movie is going to be fine. They’re bluffing,” I counter and I look at Grant. “You know they are,” I say and wait for him to agree but he doesn't. He looks thoughtful. Kit sees it too and I want to scream. We both know anything can happen when it comes to movies. There have been promising productions that were canned without a second word. Our being part of the cast should be enough to carry this movie, even if it’s trash, but it’s not.

By The Way is good. And the main reason for that isn’t because Grant and I are a part of it, it’s because Kit’s had her hands on the script every step of the way. It’s smart, funny and thoughtful in a way that I understand deeply as all Kit.

The movie puts my girl’s heart right on display for everyone to see and that’s why it’s so damn good. Whatever pearl clutching conservative fuck started whispering in the investors’ ears is a piece of shit.

“And what if they’re not? I won’t take that risk. I’m staying. Go and finish the movie and I’ll be here when you get back.”

Holly lets out a relieved exhale and nods along with Kit. “That’s perfect. We’ll ensure you have security, I promise. We can even move you to a new location until they’re done filming and-”

“She stays and I walk,” Grant interrupts Holly.

Kit’s face crumples and she frowns at him. “Grant, no. Stop it.”

“She stays and so do I,” I join in and Kit looks like she wants to pull her hair out when I move to stand beside Grant.

“You can’t do this,” she whispers, blinking back tears. I want to go to her but I don’t. I stay put and shake my head.

“I said what I said. You’re not staying here. That’s final,” I tell her and then look at Holly and Jane. “You can tell those fuckers they can threaten whatever they want but she’s coming with us. We both know they won’t pull the plug on the movie because it’s going to be a hit. We all fucking know it, so they can take their bullshit somewhere else.”

“Grant…” Holly tries, because she knows he’s the weak link between the two of us. He’s controlled by his emotions when it comes to Kit, the way he’s watching her almost cry gives him away. But when Holly says his name he goes stone cold.

“The same people that have a problem with us being together, Holly…they the same people pissed they never got us on the casting couch?”

Jane’s mouth drops open and Holly clears her throat and looks down at her clipboard. “I’ll tell them all three of you will be enroute to the new location,” she says and plucks a packet of papers off her clipboard to hand to Kit.

“This is your itinerary.”

“Funny how fast you found that,” I say and Holly purses her lips at me. I’ll get an earful from Rita no doubt about it, but it’s worth it.

Holly ignores my comment and straightens her shoulders. “We’ll be leaving tomorrow morning at 5am sharp with a select crew going with us. I trust you won’t be late and I assure you that your safety is our highest priority,” she says, falling into the role of a professional with practiced ease.

“We’ll be there. Thanks,” Grant says before he grabs Kit’s hand and tugs her back to us.

“I can’t believe you both,” Kit whispers and glares at us. “They said they might cancel the movie!”

“They won’t,” I tell her and give her a reassuring smile. “They would never lose a feature that has us both in it.”

“But what if they do?” Kit protests and Grant silences her with a quick kiss.

“They won’t. He’s right. Even if the movie was a mess, which it’s not because you wrote it, they'd never get another deal with the pair of us and they know it. The movie will be finished, it will go to screen. I promise.”

Kit nods but doesn’t look so sure.

I take her face and kiss her. “By The Way will be made into a movie. We won’t let anyone stop it or you.”

“How do you know?” she asks and I hear that tremble in her voice that alway has me ready to kill.

“Because we’re monsters the world does not tell us to move. We tell the world to move.”

Chapter Sixteen

KIT

Your boyfriend telling you he’s a monster shouldn’t be something that makes you trust him and relax but for me it is, because it’s the truth. The movie’s fate is also kind of riding on Grant and Rafe’s ability to bend people to their will, so monsters are good right now.

God. The movie. What if they do cancel it?

What would I do?
