“Shit. I wasn’t supposed to say anything yet. But yes, it’s a girl.”
She beams. “My only little boy is having a little girl.”
She gives me a hug. The kind of hug that a mom gives her kid. And she doesn’t let go until I’m ready for her to.
I see where Dylan gets it from. I guess the whole family gives great hugs.
When I finally let go, she asks, “What are you doing the rest of the day?”
“Nothing. I was just doing some cleaning. Why?”
She pats my legs before standing up. “Come on. Let’s go grab some lunch and go baby shopping.”
“Are you serious? You want to go shopping with me?” I ask while struggling to get off the couch.
“Yes. Let’s go blow some money.”
After a day of shopping with Suzanne, I sit in the middle of the living room surrounded by bags and a large crib box.
When she asked if I wanted to go shopping, I figured it was window shopping. That’s usually what I do since I’m poor.
But she meant it when she said she was ready to spend some money. No matter how many times I told her she didn’t have to do it, she kept insisting she wanted to.
As I’m going through a bag of baby clothes, Dylan walks through the front door and immediately stops in his tracks.
“Leah? What’s going on? Have we been reverse robbed?”
“Your mom came over and took me shopping.”
“My mom?” He asks.
“Yeah. We are besties now. She came over to tell me she was here for me. Then, I cried and accidentally told her we were having a girl. So, she wanted to go shopping, and she got us a crib.”
He looks around, confused. “Exactly how long was I gone?”
forty
We’ll Figure it Out
Dylan
One week later.
24 weeks pregnant.
“I have to hand it to you, sis. That’s one cute baby,” I say to Liz as she rocks her new baby girl.
“Cutest baby you’ve ever seen?” She asks, looking up at me.
“Uh, you’re kind of putting me on the spot here, Liz. If I say yes, you’ll go tell Michelle.”
Leah steps in. “Well, Liz, I think little Beth is the cutest baby I’ve ever seen.”
I look at her, and she shrugs and whispers, “I haven’t seen a lot of babies. And ours hasn’t popped out yet.”
“Traitor,” I mumble.
Liz stares daggers through me. “Thank you, Leah. Would you like to hold the baby?”
