Once we are off the plane, we grab our luggage and head over to get our rental car. The whole time, we are pretty quiet, as if neither of us has a clue of what to say.
It isn’t until we are finally in the car on our way to the resort that either one of us finally speaks.
I start the conversation off. “Hey, I’m sorry about that thing on the plane. I didn’t know how else to get that jerk to leave you alone, aside from beating him to a pulp. And I try not to fight if I can help it.”
She looks confused. “Why are you sorry? You got that creep to leave me alone, and then, you didn’t even complain when I slept on you for half the flight. I should be thanking you.”
“I just didn’t want to make things weird or anything.”
She gives me a casual smile. “Not weird at all. I promise.”
I don’t know if I entirely believe her, but I decide just to let it go for fear of making things even more awkward.
I look over at her in her long sleeve shirt and sweatpants and can’t help but chuckle a little.
Looking embarrassed, she asks, “What?”
Glancing down at my own outfit, I reply, “Just thinking about how you and I are both going to have to rethink our wardrobes to acclimate to this warmer weather.”
“True,” she laughs. “It’ll be nice not to have to wear my giant winter coat.”
When I look over at her, she’s smiling ear to ear. I’ve never noticed how cute it is until now. I guess my typical grumpy disposition doesn’t give her much of a reason to smile at work.
As we pull up to the resort, I hand the keys to the valet, and I grab our bags out of the back. Romy reaches for hers, but I tell her I’ve got it.
I give my name at the check-in desk, and the man pulls out two room keys and hands one to each of us.
“Rooms 2102 and 2103, sir. The rooms are adjoining,” he says.
Romy looks a little uncomfortable, so I try to put her at ease.
“There weren’t a lot of room choices since I booked so late. Don’t worry; I’ll only use the front door.” I shoot her a wink.
She returns a warm smile.
When we are outside of our rooms, I say, “How about we go get settled and change clothes, and we can grab some dinner? This resort has a couple of great restaurants. One is a steakhouse, I think.”
“Sounds great,” she agrees.
We set a time and head inside our separate rooms. It’s been a hell of a day so far, and I’m wondering if the rest of the week will be equally as eventful.
