“V, he’s super cute,” I begin. “But I just quit my job, and I don’t know that I can afford a dog.”

“I knew you’d say that,” she replies, walking back out into the hall. When she returns, she’s holding a crate in one hand and a few bags in the other. “Which is why I’ve officially got you everything you need to get started. He’s got a crate, two bowls, and enough food to last him a month. There are also treats and toys, and he’s already been to the vet. Mr. Romeo has a clean bill of health and is up to date on all of his shots.”

Geez, she really did think of everything.

She sets the stuff down and walks over to me. “Romy, I’m not taking no for an answer. You need something to be happy about.”

I know all of this is coming from a good place, so I give a simple nod in response.

A wide smile spreads across her lips before she pulls me in for a hug. She then turns and heads for the door.

“Hey, where are you going?” I ask.

“I have to catch up on some stuff. I spent my whole day shopping for the dog.” With another smile and a small wave, she’s gone again.

I look down at Romeo, who looks like he can barely keep his eyes open.

“Don’t worry, boy,” I say. “I feel like that too when she leaves. Come on, let’s introduce you to some trashy television.”
