Chapter Twenty-eight

Romy

“These might be the best pastries I’ve ever had,” I say with my mouth full.

Aiden and I are eating breakfast at a cute little cafe overlooking the water. We ordered a couple of coffees and a tray full of pastries. I’m pretty sure if I keep eating them, my ass is going to double in size.

I look across the table at Aiden, who is looking out over the ocean. He’s wearing a plain white t-shirt and a pair of jeans, but he’s still sexy as hell. He’s got his hair pulled back into a low ponytail—the ends of it are blowing in the breeze. And to top it all off, he’s wearing his new hat.

There’s something about him wearing something I got him that makes me feel a little territorial. It makes me want to puff out my chest and chase off any other female that comes near him.

But I won’t do that because, after today, he won’t be mine anymore. I got him the hat almost as a goodbye—a nice reminder of our fleeting time together.

I just hope I don’t get sad every time I look at it.

Trying to push away the bad thoughts, I decide to break the silence between us.

“So, who was the guy that stopped us earlier?” I ask.

“I’m sure you’ve heard of Jason Rush,” he says.

Okay, guilty. I have heard of him, but I’m not sure what he wanted.

“And he wants to partner up with you on some projects?” I ask.

Finishing the bite in his mouth, he shakes his head back and forth. “He’s not looking to partner up with me.”

“Then, why did he—?”

He cuts me off. “He’s trying to buy me out. As of late, I’ve been his biggest competition. He’s trying to use us working together as an excuse to squash me like a bug. This isn’t the first offer I’ve had to buy the company, so I’ll go away.”

I take a sip of my coffee. “Do you ever think about it?”

“Think about what?” His brow furrows.

“About selling. About sitting back and counting a huge stack of money.”

“Nah, I’ve worked too damn hard to get where I am, and I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I wasn’t going to work every day. Plus, I’d miss seeing my cute assistant.” He winks and gives me a panty-melting smile.

I just hope he still feels that way after we end this whole thing.

After breakfast, we hit a couple more stores—more browsing rather than buying anything. We hold hands and talk and laugh. It’s nice.

I’m going to miss it.

But I try not to think about that.

Instead, I try to enjoy our time together and try to pretend that tomorrow doesn’t exist.

While walking around, we find a random hole-in-the-wall arcade and duck into play some games.

“Are you ready to lose?” Aiden asks as we walk over to a row of Ski Ball machines.

I look all around me, even bending down to peek under one of the machines.

“What are you doing?” He asks.
