Veronica rolls her eyes. “Of course, she told me. Why do you think I’m here?”
“At this point, I’m not really sure why you’re here. Why don’t you enlighten me by getting to the point?” I ask.
“Aiden, I have seen my best friend at the worst points in her entire life—the lowest of the low.” She pauses for a moment. “But never have I seen her as low as she is right now. She misses you, but she is way too damn stubborn to say it because she’s scared of rejection, so I’m here to say it for her.”
“So, she sent you?”
She laughs. “Hell no! She’d kill me if she knew I was here, but I had to come anyway. I’m just here to tell you that you both need to stop being stupid and get together already.”
When I don’t say anything—because I’m not sure what to say, Veronica gets up and heads for the door.
She turns toward me one last time. “Look, I didn’t come here to bust your balls. I came here because I thought you might be missing her just as much as she misses you. If not, forget I was here. But I think you and I both know that a girl like Romy Sinclair doesn’t come along very often.”
With that, she’s out the door, and I’m stuck trying to pick up my jaw off the floor.
Why wouldn’t Romy tell me that something was going on while we were away? I would have been right there to help her fix it.
But that’s not Romy, is it? She wants to handle everything herself. But I should have at least seen something was bothering her. Maybe if I had pressed harder, she would have told me.
I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel good that she was missing me like I’m missing her. The only thing that will make me feel really good, though, is having her back in my arms.
Without wasting another moment, I grab my jacket and head out the door, ready to make that happen.
