I choose my words carefully. This feels crucial. I can’t get it wrong.
“That depends. Are you trying to drive me away?”
Shaky laugh from Griffin. “I’d like to think I’m smarter than that. I know it’s questionable sometimes, but…”
“Hmmm. I’m inclined to give you a chance. Would that be a waste of my time?”
We stare at each other for several long beats. He swallows hard, making his Adam’s apple bob and revealing a depth of vulnerability that makes my heart ache. Takes a deep breath.
“No.”
“Good,” I say, relieved. So is he, judging by the way his eyes crinkle at the corners. “I think I’m going to grab my credit card and go order that pizza. I’m starving. I seem to have worked up an appetite.”
Griffin scowls. “This is a test, isn’t it?”
“Absolutely,” I say. “Proceed carefully.”
He heaves an aggrieved sigh and gives my shoulder a final kiss.
“Whatever you want. Just make sure my half is pineapple-free.”
