Vóva was slow to let her go, but he eventually did. She snatched her hand away, hiding it behind her back. Her teeth were digging into her bottom lip, but she was remaining still and outwardly calm. The need to whisk her out of here and take her somewhere quiet and safe was almost overpowering. If I hadn’t been certain that would make things worse, I would have already done it.
Marco stepped in on our little family reunion. “Actually, Evelyn is here because of me. She and Ivan go to school together, but she’s my intern this semester.”
My brother chuckled. “Do you know many high school students?”
Marco played it cool, even though I knew he did not like the implications of the question. “Nah, before Ev, there was Ivan. Other than that, I don’t make it a habit to hang out with the underage crowd. I found Ev through a friend who works at the academy. She’s a good girl. Now, if you’ll excuse us, I actually have something I need her to do downstairs.”
Marco looped his arm around Evelyn’s shoulders and steered her out of his office without another word. If that man ever needed a kidney, he could have mine. I could finally breathe now that Evelyn was out of the room.
Vóva watched the door after they disappeared from sight, tapping his chin in contemplation.
“Your girlfriend is pretty,” he stated.
“I never said she was my girlfriend.”
He laughed. “Oh, you didn’t have to, baby brother. The way you looked at me when I had her hand in mine like you were gonna kill me if I didn’t let go said it all.”
I shrugged, not confirming what he already knew. The less I said, the better. This was all going to get back to our father, but he did not have to know how deep my feelings stretched.
Vóva’s shoulders shook as he laughed harder. “All right, all right. I see you don’t want to talk about her. That’s okay. I haven’t seen my baby brother in months. Your nieces and nephews have forgotten you exist by now.”
I scoffed. “I doubt that since I’m their favorite.”
“Were. Children are fickle. It’s out of sight, out of mind.”
“I FaceTime all of them weekly. Shall I send them a California beach?”
He wagged his finger at me. “Now you’re onto something. That might be what it takes to be the favorite again. As of now, it’s Uri.”
I threw my arms out. “He doesn’t even like kids.”
Vóva winked. “Like I said, out of sight, out of mind.”
Evelyn laid her body atop mine, propping herself up on my chest. “All right?”
With a sigh, I laid my hands on her bare ass cheeks. “I don’t know yet. We’ll see what my father has to say when he calls.”
Marco had sent Evelyn home with his personal driver. I’d had to stick out the entire evening with Vóva watching over my shoulder.
My girl had been waiting for me in my room. After the long night with my brother, it had been a relief to climb into bed and finally take a breath with her in my arms.
“Vóva seemed…nice,” she hedged.
My chuckle was more of an exhalation of exhaustion than a true laugh. “He is a good brother but an even better son. I missed him, and it was good to see him, but I wish I’d had some warning.”
“You didn’t want me to meet him.”
“No, I did not. I’m sure he’s already told our father about you.”
“I tried to impress him with my Russian. Hopefully it will be enough for him to report good things about us.”
“Ah, Evelyn.” Gripping her ass, I dragged her up my chest so I could take her mouth with mine. She whimpered softly, her lips parting, letting me inside.
Then she let me inside her body. We lay facing each other, limbs tangled, arms wrapped, riding gentle waves of pleasure and heavy surges of need.
This couldn’t be taken from me. I would not let it. We were too good, fitting too well with each other, for an outside force to drag us apart.
“Mine,” I whispered to her.
