"I heard. Tara came into work at the same time you pulled up. She told me." Daisy grabbed his hand as they stepped onto the sidewalk. "Thanks for doing that. I didn't want to take a half-day off work and make Liz work more hours than what's on her schedule."
She squeezed his hand. The change in their lives now that his motorcycle club was protecting the house and, essentially, watching out for her put a strain on her. She never wanted to be a burden to anyone, and yet she found herself thankful that Bane was in her life.
He'd promised to take care of her, and he seemed confused about why it bothered her. Her life should be carefree and undangerous. Bane shouldn't have to watch over her. His MC shouldn't have to guard the duplex.
He opened the door of her Jeep. She jumped into the driver's seat.
"I'll follow you." He kissed her before walking away.
She sighed, wishing they could go back to discovering each other instead of falling into the role of hero and victim.
Knowing there was no way she could change anything until the person responsible for destroying her duplex and slashing her tires was caught, she started the Jeep and put the vehicle in Reverse.
As she pulled out, she spotted Bane in her rearview mirror. He rode his Harley and stayed close enough other cars couldn't pull in between them. A part of her wanted to tell him he was overreacting. Nothing bad ever happened in Seaglass Cove.
But her family was proof that bad shit happened.
Why was everything centered around her?
Not that she wanted someone else to suffer. She gripped the steering wheel, squeezing and rubbing, trying to ease the tension building the closer she got to the duplex.
Since the tires got slashed, she hadn't had a restful sleep. She even catered to the idea that she could sell the Duplex and buy a house elsewhere. But she loved her job. She wouldn't want to leave Liz. And she was falling in love with Bane.
It was impossible to hope Bane would leave his club and move somewhere else with her.
She pulled into the driveway. Shutting off the engine, she studied the outside of the duplex. Everything looked the same as when she'd left it that morning.
Turning in the seat, she watched Bane pull into the driveway and park beside her. Then, she scanned the road. Somewhere out there, a Havlin member watched.
Chapter Twenty
"Hey, babe?"
"Yeah?"
The ocean waves rolled. The current was on its way out. Since moving to Seaglass Cove, he hadn't walked off the dune in front of the duplex.
