"No." She gasped at the loudness of her reply. "I mean, I want to talk inside."

The change in her voice warned him she was close to changing her mind and going back to hiding the truth from him.

"Okay, babe." He sat down on the couch and tried to calm his body down.

She washed her hands and put a pod in the coffee maker. He ran his hands through his hair. While the coffee dripped, Daisy brought him a warm, wet washrag. He ran it over his face, taking her juice off him.

Then, she delivered a cup to him and sat across the living room in the chair, far away from him.

Chapter Fourteen

Daisy's heart pounded with dread. She'd never shared her side of what happened June 7th with anyone.

Everyone else had taken their thoughts from what the newspaper had printed and the newscasters had said on television and came up with what they believed happened.

No one thought of what their nosiness had done to a seventeen-year-old.

"Sit by me," said Bane.

She pulled her bare feet up into the chair and set her cup on her thigh. "I can't."

"Why?"

"Because I'm scared and if I touch you, I won't go through with telling you what happened."

He frowned.

"I"ve never told anyone what I'm going to try and tell you." She swallowed. "Not even Liz, who I love like a sister. More than a sister. She's been my best friend since I was eight years old."

"Why wouldn't you tell her?"

"Because she never asked me for more details. She knows when I need space."

"Like on June 7th?" asked Bane.

She nodded. "Like June 7th."
