He wanted to know who was responsible for Guthrie's murder, and more importantly, Tarkio wouldn't be blamed or gain another enemy.

He'd lost enough men to prison; he wouldn't sit back and lose more.

Riding over to the motel, he stopped at McDonald's. He needed no excuse to visit Nicole, but he wanted her to welcome him. It would soften her to him if he brought dinner with him.

Going through the drive-thru, he paid for Big Macs and a couple of fries. Pulling off to the side in the parking lot, he put the sack in his duffle, then went the three blocks to the motel.

Spotting Razor across the street, he lowered his hand as he passed. Razor lifted his chin and started his Harley. In Priest's side mirror, his MC brother rode away.

He parked, grabbed dinner, and strode to Nicole's door and knocked. After several minutes, he rapped his knuckles against the wood again and said, "It's Priest. Open up."

When that failed to bring her to the door, he tried the handle. It was locked.
