Chapter 24

By Saturday night,Lizzy was having a hard time being without Roar. During the week, if she wasn't sleeping, she worked to stay busy. Even getting together with him during her lunch break seemed jinxed with club business pulling Roar away from her.

But he'd promised her that tomorrow, they could spend the whole day together and if she wanted to go to the party at the clubhouse, they could. She loaded the last napkin dispenser in her section.

She looked toward the kitchen, hoping to see him in the hallway. Even though they'd planned a day, it wasn't enough for her. She wanted to invite him to stay at the house tonight, in her bed. Coco had told her she wouldn't care since she only planned to sleep.

They could have privacy and be together without any interruptions.

More customers walked in. She smiled, thinking they were Slag members, but their vests were different.

"Go ahead and take a seat. Menus are on the table, and I'll be around to get your order whenever you're ready." She turned around to check on her other customers, and Peer walked toward her, holding a pistol at his side, away from the customers.

"Lizzy, get the other women and go in the kitchen." Peer moved past her.

Heart racing, she hurried away, motioning for the others, and practically pushed them into the hallway. There were always risks to working in food service where alcohol was served, but fights and arguments were always settled quickly and without a threat of a weapon.

"What's going on?" whispered Coco.

She looked over her shoulder, trying to see through the window in the swinging door. "I don't know, but we need to call the police. Peer's pointing a gun at those men that walked in."

"You can't call the cops." Monica looked at Heather. "It'sSlag business. I got a look at the men. They're wearing Lagsturns Motorcycle Club vests."

"Who's that?" asked Coco.

Lizzy pressed a hand to her chest. The customers continued to eat as if nothing had happened. How could they not have noticed the employees leaving the room?

The music over the sound system continued to play and now seemed too loud for the atmosphere. Unable to see Peer or the other men, she stepped toward the window.

"Lizzy, no." Coco grabbed her arm.

"Wait." She pushed the door, making a crack to look through. "They aren't in there anymore."

The back door opened. Lizzy and Coco muffled a scream of surprise, plastering themselves against the wall as Elling, Marcus, and Brage came rushing through.

"Let's go in the breakroom and shut the door." Heather motioned for everyone.

She looked at Coco. Something wasn't right. There were customers out there. Peer wouldn't leave the cash register with no one to watch it.

Sequestered in the small room, Lizzy said, "What about the customers?"

"They'll be okay for a few minutes." Heather opened a water bottle.

A door opened and closed, then a knock came. Monica, being closest, unlocked the door and cracked it open.

Roar filled the space. "You ladies can go serve the customers."

His gaze found Lizzy. As Monica and Heather went back out to the bar, she stayed in the room with Coco.

Roar tilted her face. "Did they do something to you?"

"Nothing happened." She grabbed his vest. "I was going to serve them, and Peer came around the counter, and I saw a gun in his hand, and he told me to take the girls back here. What is going on?"

"Some men who aren't allowed on Slag property paid a visit. Peer removed them from the premises." He looked at her and Coco. "From now on, if anyone walks through the doors that aren't wearing Slag colors on their vests, you tell Peer or me immediately."

"Why?"

Roar's mouth hardened into a straight line behind his beard. "Common sense."
