Chapter 13
Dave, a regular atThe Fire Ring, put his fists in front of him as if he wanted to fight. "How'd the other guy make out?"
"Now, why would you think I'd be fighting?" Lizzy grinned. "Plus, you're not supposed to notice and say anything when a lady gets crow lines removed."
"Crow lines." Dave laughed. "Honey, you don't need any help being pretty."
"Aren't you sweet." She tapped her order pad on her hand. "What can I get you tonight?"
"How about an order of poppers and a mug of beer."
"That I can do." She smiled. "I'll be right back."
Going to the kitchen window, she hung the order and looked over to see if Peer was busy with a customer. Seeing him wiping down the sink, she stepped over to him.
"Hey, I wanted to talk to you. If it's okay," she said quietly.
"Shoot." He tossed the rag under the counter and turned his full attention on her.
"I wanted to apologize." She ignored his frown. "If I did anything wrong to upset—"
"Don't be talking like that." Peer's gaze softened. "Kelli was wrong. She's got a temper when it comes to me being around other women."
She nodded. It was apparent from the beginning that Kelli was jealous of anyone who came into contact with Peer. It wasn't any of her business what made her that way. Whether she had a real reason or an imaginary one, it wasn't attractive.
"I just wanted to make sure you and I were good," she said.
"Ja, we're good." Peer looked over her shoulder. "Nothing to worry about or apologize for."
"Thanks." She inhaled deeply. "I need to get a beer."
"I'll get it." Peer moved down the counter and picked up a mug.
She turned around to check the kitchen order and found Roar standing at the end of the bar. From the frown on his face, she wondered if it was bikers in general or their Norwegian heritage that made them all show their displeasure.
Walking over to him, she smiled. "Hey."
"Problem?" He looked between her and Peer.
She shook her head. "Not at all."
Peach put the order in the window. She grabbed the food basket, fetched the beer, and walked past Roar to take Dave's order to him.
"If you need anything else, let me know." She wandered away, spotting Roar still watching her.
As if needing validation, she looked over at Coco—who raised her brows. Okay, maybe Roar had been watching her more than what was normal since the incident with Kelli.
Her stomach fluttered, and she looked at the clock. She only had ten more minutes until her lunch break. Hoping Roar would stick around, she wanted to talk to him and see if there was something making him unhappy.
It was the least she could do for him helping her after Kelli punched her.
They hadn't had a real chance to talk since she'd returned to work the next day—looking pitiful and feeling like crap. Roar had wanted her to go home. He hadn't said a word, but she could tell that he was uneasy having her at the bar.
But, if she would've stayed home, she wouldn't have been paid, so she'd powered through.
Monica tucked in the chairs around the table beside her. Both she and Heather had asked how she was doing the following day but had kept their distance. Knowing they were friends with Kelli, she tried to act normal. She wouldn't want Kelli getting wind that she had made Lizzy suffer.
She just wanted the whole situation to disappear and be forgotten.
