A puff of air came from him in amusement. "Really."

"That explains the way you guys talk and act, I guess." She opened her good eye and blinked against the light in the room. "I'm a Heinz-fifty-seven. Do you know what that is?"

"A mutt," he said.

She sat up and turned, so her feet were on the floor and laughed. "Yes...or maybe I should say ja."

His gaze warmed and he lifted her chin with his finger and inspected her eyes. "Ja, my mutt."

She groaned at his attempt to crack a joke. Covering her face with her hands, she realized how awful she must look. He was definitely seeing her at her worst.

"Time to ice it, again."

She laid back down, putting her head on his lap. The next time she'd see him, her makeup would be done to perfection, hiding the black eye, and she'd smile. He liked it when she smiled.
