The joy.
The changes.
Roar.
A knock startled her. She quickly wiped her face and rushed to the door, peeking out. Brage and other members of Slag were outside.
She opened the door, holding her finger to her lips, and stepped back to let them in.
Finn pushed his way through the six men standing in the living room and nodded at Lizzy before going to the couch. She wanted to stop him from bothering Roar, but when he peeled back the blanket and looked at the wound, she let him be. He was the closest thing to a doctor they had.
Peer moved in beside her. "You doing okay?"
She nodded, and when he kept looking at her, she said, "If anything would've happened to him, I don't know what—"
"Nah, don't think like that." Peer crossed his arms and looked at Roar. "He'll be on his feet before you're ready."
Brage leaned over. "Nothing stops, Prez."
"He'll heal fine," said Viktor
Rune cleared his throat. "He's a tough motherfucker."
"Sh." She quieted the bunch down. "He's not going to get better if he doesn't get some rest."
When she first met the Slag members, they'd scared her. Now, she was willing to step in front of all of them to protect Roar.
Finn stood. She walked over and covered Roar up again. He might not care that he was sporting his boxers, but what was under the blanket belonged to her.
"Make sure he keeps taking the antibiotics and try to convince him to take the pain medication, too. It'll keep him off his feet," said Finn.
"Is his thigh supposed to be so red?" she whispered.
"Ja." Finn's gaze softened. "His thigh looks like I expected. It's not worse."
She exhaled in relief. "That's good, right?"
"It'll do." Finn walked toward the door. "Call if it looks worse."
The men started walking out. Brage stayed in the living room after they'd all left the house. Her heart wouldn't slow down. Even with the added assurance that Roar wasn't getting worse or infection hadn't set in, she wouldn't relax until all he had was a scar.
Brage rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm handling everything over at the clubhouse, but there could be things that come up that I'll need to talk with Prez about."
"I understand. You're welcome to come here whenever you need him," she said.
Brage glanced at her. "If you need anything, let me know."
"Thank you."
He dipped his chin and left. She locked the door behind him.
Then, she sat on the floor beside the couch and watched over her biker while he slept. She thought of their future together. The family they may start someday. The memories they'd definitely share. The love that would grow and grow.
Roar's hand palmed the top of her head. "Lizzy?"
"Yes?"
He sighed. "Just making sure you're here with me."
She lifted her head. His eyes remained closed.
Lizzy smiled.
