Page 46 of Kissing My Soulmate

She smiled. “I love you too.”

Now my son, my son, I still can’t believe it, sleeps soundly in my arms. He is perfect, and right now he is named baby boy Mitchell. We didn’t want to pick out names until we saw him. His dark brown hair peeks out from under the little pink and blue striped hat he’s wearing.

I’ve sent a text out with a picture to all our friends and they’re all eager to meet him when we’re ready. I get situated, lying on the sofa with my boy on my chest and feel at peace.

Rolling over in bed, I find Lie’s side of the bed empty and the sheets cold. I climb out of bed and after using the bathroom, I glance into the bassinet, it’s empty. Downstairs I head into the family room and find my wife sitting crisscross. Our son, Jensen, sleeps in her arms.

“Hey, baby,” I say as I reach her and kiss her upturned lips. “Did he start fussing?” I sit down next to her, and I take him from her arms. He scrunches up his body and then settles in my arms. I love when he does that.

“He’s a little pig and was hungry.” She lays her head on my shoulder.

Jensen wouldn’t latch on so she pumps. He gets both breastmilk and formula. He’s becoming a chunky butt already, but I love it. For only being two weeks old, he’s changed so much already.

I think we’ve settled nicely into parenthood and I’m taking one more week off before I go back to work. Lie is going to take twelve, which I am glad. I’ll know he’s safe here with his mom.

“Tell Mommy you’re a growing boy.” I lift him until I can kiss his forehead. I’m not able to take my eyes off him. He’s the most beautiful baby I have ever seen. I know everyone says that, but it’s true, and of course, everyone says that too. “I can’t believe I almost lost you, which would’ve lost him too.”

“But you didn’t, and now we’re here together with him.” She kisses the underside of my chin. “I love you, Jasper.”

“I love you, Lie, and I love this little boy.” Our boy squeaks and then looks up at me. “Hi, baby boy.” His little hand wraps around my finger, making me smile.

While we watch The Office, Bob Vance sleeps on the back of the sofa, and close to his baby. He’s a little obsessed with Jensen, but in the best way. Lorelei snuggles into my side, and I’m leaning back with the baby on my chest.

She’s my soulmate, we were meant to be together, and I’m thankful every day we found our way back to each other.

One Year Later

Baby giggles have me moving through the house, I find the source of the noise and smile. Jasper is on the floor, bench-pressing our boy. My husband is gorgeous, but when he’s with our son he’s even more so.

This past year has been amazing, and we’ve grown so much. Jensen is a year old and such a smart boy. He’s wild and into everything, but I love it. He keeps us on our toes, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Jasper’s practice has steadily grown and with Tailer there, it’s helped lighten the load. She and her wife are amazing, and have become good friends of ours. Jensen loves their daughter, but not as much as Sadie’s daughter. Our boy is loved by a lot of people.

After Jensen was born, Jasper’s mom reached out again and had found out about our son and sent a gift. He wasn’t sure if we should keep it, and I told him it was up to him. We decided to keep it and sent her a thank you card.

That was the last communication he’s had with her. I’m not sure if she’ll reach out again, and Jasper’s certainly not ready for any sort of relationship with her, but maybe someday. It kind of sucks that our child doesn’t have grandparents.

That’s okay though because he has lots of honorary aunts and uncles who love him.

I’m still working at Magnolia Marketing, but only work about twenty-five hours a week. We’re not sure if we want any more kids, so I want to savor every moment with our little guy. It works out for us. We don’t have to have him in daycare too much, at least not yet.

I look at the sofa and find Bob sitting on the arm, watching his boy play. Jensen is so gentle with him, and the cat is gentle with our boy.

Jasper stops and smiles at me. “Look, it’s Mommy,” he says and then stands up with the baby in his arms.

The moment Jensen sees me, he practically throws himself out of his dad’s arm toward me. I catch him with practiced ease. “Hi, my baby.” I kiss all over his face until I reach his cheek and blow a raspberry.

He does this little belly laugh that makes me smile.

“I’m so glad we decided to stay in this weekend,” I say, looking at Jasper. “You’ve been so busy and every weekend we’ve had something going on, it’ll be nice to hang out in our comfy clothes and just stay home.”

I sit down in the corner of the sofa and Jensen snuggles into me. Jasper joins us and wraps his arm around my shoulders. “Yeah, I’m glad we have nothing going on too.” He looks down at our boy. “He’s about ready to fall asleep. How about when he takes a nap, I take you upstairs for some s-e-x?”
