Page 44 of Kissing My Soulmate

I leaned forward with my elbows resting on my knees. “Honestly, I don’t want to see her right now. She didn’t fight for me and I don’t know if she could say anything that would make me have any understanding about what she did.” I shook my head. “You protect both of your children, no matter what.”

“Lorelei, what are your thoughts?”

She leaned into me. “I will support whatever Jasper wants. I’d like to tell her off, but I’m going to do whatever he needs of me.” She kissed my cheek and then hugged my arm.

“How are things with the two of you?” he asked.

I answered first. “Great, and honestly, I wish I would’ve communicated with Lorelei better from the very beginning, maybe sought you out at the start. It could’ve solved a lot of our problems.”

“I agree,” Lorelei interjected. “We could’ve saved a lot of heartache and pain had we just talked more.”

“I’m glad. I am here for you both. You can keep coming as long as you want, there is obviously no time limit to therapy.” Jefferson then walked us out and we decided to wait on scheduling any more appointments.

Now, I head back to the office so I can chart my visit and get the samples ready to send off with the courier.

I pull into the parking lot as Lorelei’s name shows up on the screen. Parking, I hit the green answer button. “Hey, baby.”

“I felt the baby move!” she screeches.

I smile at Lorelei’s excitement. “What does it feel like?”

“It just feels like a lot of butterflies in one spot. I can’t feel it on the outside though, but hopefully it means you will soon.” Her joy is contagious, and I smile.

“I’m so happy, baby, that’s great. I’ll be excited when I can feel it too. Let’s go out for dinner tonight and celebrate. We can go to the food truck we’ve been wanting to try with all the burgers.” I can hear her moving around.

“That sounds yummy, baby. I’ll see you when you get home,” she says before saying she loves me and then hangs up.

Inside, I wave to Jan as I walk in. I stop at Randall’s office when I find him sitting there. He stands when I walk in. “Hey, Jas, what’s up, brother?” We share a half handshake/hug.

“Nothing, man, just went to do a checkup on a horse whose owner couldn’t get him here due to a busted axle.”

“How’s Lorelei?” he asks as we both sit. “Jenny has baby stuff for you guys whenever you’re ready for it.”

I nod. “That’s great, I’ll have Lie reach out to her, thanks. She’s doing great and getting closer to the halfway point. I honestly can’t believe I almost threw all this away because of fear. Luckily, I got my head out of my ass before it was too late.”

I give a knock on his desk before I head to my office and start typing out my visit note. Once that’s done, I then pull the blood samples out of my ice pack and put them in a bag with the requisition form.

Jan steps into the back. “Hey, Jas, I’ll get this all sent out for you.”

“Thanks, I appreciate it.” I step out of the room and head down the hall to Tailer, the new vet we hired. She’s been here for two weeks so far and things are going well.

I find her sitting behind her desk. “Hey, Jasper,” she says as I walk in.

“Hey, I just wanted to make sure you’re getting settled and to see if you needed anything.” She graduated from Clemson and came highly recommended by one of our professors.

“No, I think I’m all set. Please thank Lorelei for those beautiful flowers and the dinner she had delivered to us. My wife and daughter loved the cupcakes, that was just so thoughtful.” She smiles up at me.

“We’re just happy to have you join us.” I stop in the doorway. “Seriously, anything you guys need let us know.”

“Thanks, Jasper.”

Chapter Twenty-Six

Lorelei

Five Months Later

I pace back in forth in our room, while I try to get my contractions to begin. Earlier I was folding laundry in the baby’s room when it felt like I peed my pants. I knew right away that it was my water.
