Page 42 of Kissing My Soulmate

The woman comes out a moment later with a small box. She sets it on the counter and opens the lid. “How does it look?”

I peer inside and smile. It’s exactly what I wanted, just a simple white frosted cake. The best part is in the middle, pink or blue. Smiling at her I nod. “It’s perfect.”

Paying for it, I head out to my SUV. I’m on cloud nine the whole way home. I pull into the driveway a short while later and I carry the cake inside, setting it on the counter. I’m so impatient and I want to cut into it now, but I need to wait.

For now, Bob Vance and I curl up on the sofa, watching Top Chef.

“Lie? Lie, baby, wake up.”

My eyes flutter open and I smile.

Jasper is sitting next to my hip, brushing my hair out of my face. “Tired?” he asks with a smile.

“Bob and I were just snuggling. I must’ve fallen asleep.” I push myself up and wrap my arms around him. “How was your day?”

He kisses my lips. “It was good. Next week we’ll start interviews for another doctor. We’ve got five prospects, and three are recent graduates from Clemson.”

“Your alma mater, that’s great.”

He gets up and helps me stand. With a hand on the small of my back, he leads me into the kitchen.

My mouth waters the minute I see the Crab Shack bags. “I’m starving.” I set the table while he pulls the containers out of the bags. “What do you want to drink?”

“Grab me one of those beers, please.” He smiles at me from the table.

I grab his beer and a bottle of water for myself and take my seat across from him. “So are the vets you’re going to be interviewing small animal or big?”

He dumps some salad on his plate and then some on mine. “Randall needs more help in the clinic when I’m doing on-site visits.”

“I’m sure that’s tough for him if you’re not at the clinic. It’ll help with taking calls too.” I like the idea of him not being on call so much.

I take a bite of my salad. “That will be nice, especially when the baby comes.” Once I finish my salad, I grab my crab cakes. “I’m going to have to start looking into changing up my wardrobe soon. Everything is starting to get tight around my waist and in my boobs.”

“You look sexy to me.” He winks at me and cuts into his steak.

By the time we’re done, I’m stuffed, but ready to dig into the cake. I stand up and pick up the empty containers. “I can’t believe we ate all this food.”

“It was good, but I didn’t doubt it. I’ve never met a meal from there I didn’t like.” He stands and helps me clear the table.

We finish up and then I grab the cake and pull it out of the box. “Should I just cut into it?” I ask.

“Let’s do it.” I hand him the knife and like a bridal couple cutting their cake, we both grab on to the handle, and we slice.

The moment we slide the piece out, I begin to cry. “We’re having a little boy.” I let go of the knife so I can throw my arms around him and then step back to jump up and down. “I can’t believe it. God, I hope he looks just like you.”

It takes me a moment to realize Jasper hasn’t reacted at all. He’s still staring at the piece of cake. It’s like he’s made of stone.

“Jasper, what’s going on? Are you upset? Do you not want a boy?” I move in front of him. “Please answer me. You’re starting to freak me out.”

He finally turns to look at me after what feels like an eternity. “I swear to you, I’ll never hurt my boy, and I’ll never abandon him.” Grabbing my face, he leans in and kisses my forehead. “I promise you.”

I wrap my arms around his waist, hugging him tight. “I know you won’t. You’re going to be the best dad in the whole wide world.”

“How do you know?” He holds my gaze, and I can hear the fear in his voice.

Smiling up at him, I push up on my toes and kiss his lips. “Because I just know.”

“Stay right here, I’ll be right back.” Jasper walks out of the kitchen, and I take a bite of the cake, moaning at sugary goodness that melts on my tongue. I have half the piece gone when Jasper comes back into the room.
