“What?”
“Why did you smack your head on the table?”
She blew out a breath. “I’m clumsy and awkward. This is a normal occurrence for me.”
“As long as it’s normal.”
She rolled her eyes, disgusted at how shitty she was with guys. “Yeah. So thank you. You saved us.”
“It’s what I do. So, are you okay?”
Laughter spilled out. “It’s what you do? What, you go around to banks stopping robbers?”
His chuckle sent warmth through her. “Not exactly. I was wondering if you’d like to go to dinner tomorrow.”
Shock pulsed through her. “What?”
“Um, you know, food. You do eat, right?”
“Yeah. I just…you do remember what I look like, right? This isn’t some pity thing, is it? Because I don’t need your pity.”
“Not pity at all, and it’s more than a thank you. I was going to tell you this was just a thank you for helping me by calling the police, but it’s not just that.”
She pulled the phone away from her head and stared at it for a second. “Why?”
“Because I want to see you again.”
“You’re crazy. I’m nothing special.”
“Will you go out to dinner with me?”
She blew out a breath as frustration filled her. This man was incredibly sexy, and he was making a mistake asking her out. “You do know you could have any woman you wanted. Right?”
His deep chuckle shot straight through her to her core, making her feel things she hadn’t felt in ages. “Having any woman isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Having the right woman makes all the difference in the world.”
The words burned through her, and she opened her mouth and then shut it. He didn’t know her, but that’s what dating was. She shouldn’t push him away, but she couldn’t believe a man like him would even look at her.
“Okay.”
“Good. I’m closing on my house tomorrow at four. It’s in the lawyer’s office beside the bank. I was supposed to close today, but we all know how that went. I’d like to take you out after.”
“Oh, but won’t I distract you from getting to your new house?”
“No, you won’t. I’m not moving my stuff in until Saturday. So no, you won’t distract me at all. I’d really like to take you to dinner.”
“Oh no.”
Silence filled the line for a moment. “No, what?” he finally asked.
“I’ll pay my way.”
“Okay. If that’s what you want to do, I’m okay with that. However, I need you to understand that I would never pressure you to do anything you don’t want to. I’m not that kind of guy.”
His words sank in, but she still had questions. “So if we were in the middle of sex before you penetrated me and I said stop, would you?”
This time, he spoke without any hesitation. "Yes. I’m not into making someone do something they don’t want to do.”
“You’re weird. Wait, maybe weird is the wrong word. Maybe the other guys are weird, and you’re normal. I don’t know, but I like your answer.”
