“You don’t feel bad?”

He shook his head. “No, I feel good. So what about you?”

She stood. “Not right now. Later, if you feel up to it after we get back from Harry’s or tomorrow, we’ll do more. I want you to rest now.”

He sighed and closed his eyes as he lay back on the couch. “You’re too good.”

“I’m just the right amount of good. Now, take a nap or whatever you need to do before we head out.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Andy saluted her and adjusted his clothes before he let his head drop back as he relaxed.

She smiled to herself. He was feeling better. She could see it easily in the way he walked and moved around the house. She’d been worried about him going back to work, but she felt he could handle it. He would be tired, but she knew he could do this.

Worry about the detective calling surfaced. She pushed away the desire to get on the internet and search for information about Chris and April. She knew they’d been murdered, and she didn’t want to read stories about them. It was bad enough that they’d lost their lives so tragically. She didn’t need to know the details.

Chapter 20

Andy pulled onto the base and parked in the lot where the rest of his buddies parked. He was early. He couldn’t wait to get back into the swing of things. The last thing he wanted was to be forced to take more time off.

For his training runs, he was stuck working out on a treadmill and doing low weights. It would be another week or more before the doctors would allow him to go back to working out with his group, and even then, he would be on restrictions.

He hated having to baby himself, but he loved being back at work. On Tuesday, they ended up at the conference for half the day because of trouble brewing. Paying attention through the whole meeting was difficult. He disliked that he had to move around so he didn’t fall asleep. It was embarrassing.

“Hey, you doing okay?” Wild asked as they headed out of the conference room.

He glanced around, worried someone else might hear their conversation. But there wasn’t anyone else near them other than guys from their team.

“I’m fine. It’s just hard to pay attention all day. I’ll get back into it after a few days.”

“You need to heal. If it takes a week or more, then it takes that much time.”

“Thanks. I’m sure I’ll be good. I’m just used to everything being easier.”

Wild chuckled. “Aren’t we all? Seriously, we’re here for you. Don’t hesitate to ask for help.”

Andy nodded. “Thanks.” His phone buzzed, and he checked the screen. It was a text from Mel. He stopped walking and read the text once, then again.

“Everything okay?” Wild asked.

He nodded and started walking again. “I’m sure it’s nothing. It’s a text from Mel. Turns out the guys who robbed the bank this last time were related to the guy who robbed the bank a few years ago when she first started working there. Said it was the guy’s sons and his nephew.”

Bear’s face scrunched up. “Whoa, that’s wild. Why did they do that? Seems shortsighted.”

“Didn’t they have a lot of C-4?” Harry asked.

Andy nodded. “Yeah, like much more than a civilian ever needs.”

Jax‘s lips screwed up to the side. “Maybe they weren’t there to rob the bank.”

They were in their offices, and Andy took a seat. “What do you mean?”

Jax tapped his chin. “Like, why would they have that amount of explosives? And why would they take that much time? It was like they wanted the cops to show up.”

Andy blew out a breath. “It’s concerning. I kind of forgot about that part of it. They’re in jail, and it seemed like the reasoning behind the explosives didn’t really matter.”

“Bear, you look serious. What do you think they were doing?” Peach asked.

Bear blew out a breath. “I’m going to put myself in their shoes. Like why would I, as a robber, need that much C-4? I wouldn’t. Not to rob a bank in broad daylight. Maybe if I was blowing the door in the middle of the night, knowing the police wouldn’t be able to get to the place for twenty minutes or so. But explosives in the middle of the day when the vault door is open. Who would do that? Like what would the mindset be?”
