“Are you free to come with me on a little trip up the mountain?”
“Not really, no. I finally got some replacement equipment and am working on my client backlog. I have several more appointments this evening. Did you try Brady?”
“Not yet. I’ll call him next.”
“Okay. What about Declan?”
“He’s working. He’s back on full shifts and won’t be home until morning.”
“Well, don’t go up there alone. Seb still hasn’t found Gehring.”
“I know. I’ll find someone. Go back to work. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Be careful.”
“I will. Bye.” She hung up with a sigh and called Brady. His phone rang, but rolled to voicemail. Well, Macy it was. Maggie scrolled through her contacts to find Macy’s number and touched the phone icon.
Macy picked up on the second ring. “Hey! What’s up?”
“Are you free for the evening?”
“Yeah.” Macy drew out the word. “Why?”
“I need to go help Angie Tulley form a plan to move away. I don’t want to go alone because of everything happening.”
“That’s a good idea. Yeah, I can go with you. Did you want to leave now?”
“As soon as I grab a burger from Boone’s, yes.”
“Sounds good. I’ll be ready when you get here.”
“Thanks, Macy.”
“No problem. See you in a few.”
Maggie bade her goodbye, then texted Declan. She put her SUV in gear and headed for the diner. After picking up a burger and a milkshake, she drove to Macy’s house. True to her word, Macy stepped out the front door as Maggie pulled in, ready to go.
“Do you want me to drive so you can eat?” Macy asked.
“That would be great.” Maggie got out and rounded the hood, settling into the passenger seat.
Macy buckled herself in and backed out of her driveway. Maggie told her to head out of town toward the ranch, then peeled back the wrapper on her burger and took a bite.
“So, why the spur-of-the-moment thing? I’m assuming it is, anyway. I imagine if it wasn’t, Declan would go with you.”
“Yeah, it is. Angie called and said she felt like she was being watched. I figured getting her out of town sooner rather than later was a good idea, in case she wasn’t imagining things. She’s never had to do anything like this before, though, and is a little lost.”
“I bet. She married Hank right out of high school. You’re a good person, Maggie.”
“Thanks. I just want her to feel safe. She’s been through enough.”
“We’ll get her straightened out and set up right.”
That was the plan. Maggie hoped it was that simple.
“So.” There was a load of curiosity in that one word.
Maggie gave Macy a side look, knowing where she was going with the conversation.
