That annoyed him because he’d been planning on retiring with most of his cases solved. Now, this would be dropped into his lap and end up a cold case.
Damn.
That pissed him off.
The CSI bristled at his tone, but answered him.
“It’s going to take a few hours. We have to be careful and get anything she’s touching in the murk. The water is fairly deep, so that means diving to check for clothing or a purse that might give us ID. We have to cut through the ice…”
Instead of listening, Jon began walking away as if he didn’t give a rat’s ass.
Genesis did what she did best.
She tried to smooth the waves her cranky old partner was making.
God.
He made their jobs so much harder.
Because he was rude, and she was not, Genesis apologized.
“Excuse my partner. He’s…,” she began, and was cut off when Garrett finished her sentence.
“Old,” the CSI said. “We’re accustomed to him and his behavior. I’d rather dive in the water and deal with a decaying, rotting corpse than deal with him.”
Well, she wasn’t accustomed, and that was making her really dislike her job.
Unfortunately for her, she didn’t get to do her job her way because she was stuck with Mr. Old-School. At every step, he blocked her, and damaged her chances of moving up the ladder.
Already, she had marks in her file because Jon couldn’t not stir the pot and complain about her at every turn.
This was a hellscape for her.
Why?
There was one simple reason. Jon didn’t think that women should be cops.
Jon honestly believed that they should be at home, barefoot, and knocked up.
God.
Someone was living in the wrong century, and she had to ride with him day in and day out.
Their boss stuck her with him to try and mellow him out. That wasn’t working.
Not.
At.
All.
In fact, it just made him a bigger loose cannon, out to destroy her career.
She’d already begun looking for a new job, but that took time. No one was going to drop a new detective position in her lap, and if they did, the second they saw the blemishes on her record, thanks to him, she wasn’t getting the job.
This man was taking them both down.
Well, back into battle she went.
