“I don’t see what…”
He stopped her in her tracks.
He took the blunt route.
“I’m losing you.”
Her heart skipped.
Then, came the panic.
“What?” she asked. “What do you mean by that, Beck?”
He was honest.
“I can see you slipping away. You’re not the woman I married, and I can’t fix what’s happening. I’ve lost Claire, and this is someone I don’t know.”
She moved closer.
This was her fear.
That she’d lose him.
Beckett was the best thing in her life, other than their child. He was her whole world.
“I don’t understand.”
Beckett stood.
“When I married you, I knew the kind of person you were. One of the things I loved the most about you was your compassion.”
She knew where this was going.
She put the kibosh on it.
“I’m not forgiving her. That’s what everyone wants, but it’s not what I want, Beck.”
He had to keep trying.
There was no doubt he was fighting for her soul.
“You’re missing the big picture, Claire.”
She blinked.
“Am I? I don’t think I am, Beck. She’s back, and she wrecked my life. She destroyed our family. Now, she’s returned, and I can’t trust her. I know what she’s like, and where this will go.”
That stung him on a deep level.
Why?
He’d never cheat on his wife. Claire was his miracle. They created a world, and he loved it.
Beckett went there.
“So you don’t trust me at all?” he asked.
She blinked.
