Hailey wasn’t having it.
She kept her voice low.
“No, Bo. This is our marriage. Jake had his time being alive. I love him, and I always will, but this is about us. This is our marriage—not his and ours.”
He relaxed.
“Thank you for that.”
She gave him a kiss.
“You’ve given up a lot already, and Jake is going to have to behave or he’s going to be released and have to cross.”
The app came to life and they both heard as it gasped.
“Yes, Jake, you heard me.”
The phone stayed silent, so it was clear that he got the point. She wasn’t kidding.
Tori had told her multiple times that she had to make boundaries, or the dead would take advantage of her. She wasn’t letting that happen.
No.
Freaking.
Way.
As Bodhi picked up a fork, he took some of the yellow cake, and fed Hailey. She smiled and watched him try some too. It was very couple-y and sweet.
“It’s tropical,” he said. “I like it.”
She did too.
“My turn,” she offered, going with a spice cake. When Bodhi tried it, he considered it.
“It’s very fall. I’m not sure if either scream ‘winter wonderland wedding’.”
She agreed.
“Let’s keep eating cake.”
He was down with that.
“Hails, you don’t have to ask me twice,” he said, grinning like a kid. “The only thing better is pasta.”
She agreed there.
HIS.
Pasta.
They tried five other cakes and none of them seemed to fit.
“Give me a minute,” she said, getting up and crossing the ballroom to go talk to Jennie.
Her phone, that she left, came to life.
“ARE. YOU. ANGRY. WITH. ME?” Jake asked, going there.
