“And no lawsuit?”

She nodded as she shook his hand.

“As long as you let us help the detective, and no one interrupts us.”

“I’m good with that. As long as my detective is working with you, I won’t interfere.”

Well, that was the best-case scenario for all of them.

He wasn’t done.

Captain Ivy was honest.

“These women have been missing since this summer. This might be a cold case and there might not be an outcome. My detective tried to work this as missing person’s cases.”

They weren’t impressed. The detective that locked them up without reason wasn’t exactly stellar.

Lucian already knew what was in the information that Julian had gotten for them, and he was pretty sure they would have no problem.

Call it a hunch.

At his words, Tori shrugged.

Honestly, she didn’t care what he thought about it. The bottom line was he was underestimating them.

“Let us worry about that.”

The man let it go. Instead, he turned and focused on his employee who was being incredibly quiet.

“Detective, you’re going to babysit some civilians, and then when this is over, and it goes cold, I need to see you in my office. We need to have a little talk about your time here with this department.”

Oh, shit.

That was a clear threat.

They all knew why.

This good cop opted to stand up and do the right thing, and now, she’d be vilified.

“Sure. Why the hell not?” she asked, already knowing what was coming. “In fact, let me make this easy for you, Captain. I’ll give you my two weeks’ notice. That’s what you want anyway. We all know this is a boy’s club, and I don’t have testicles. I’ll see this case out, and I’ll tender my resignation.”

He nodded.

“Good plan, Detective,” he said.

In that moment, Genesis knew the truth. She was going to be writing parking tickets at any police agency in the country that took a chance on her. This man would blackball her.

Her career was officially dead.

When the man was ready to head out, he focused on Tori.

“Don’t do anything we’re going to regret. I already have a mess here.”

Then, with that, he headed out, slamming the door behind him.

They all shook their heads.

“Well, he’s fun,” Bishop said. “I’m glad my boss isn’t an asshole,” she added.
