Page 13 of We Will Rise

“You can’t honestly think the little old lady that makes our food and does our washing would betray us.” Kaos drops into the seat beside Camilla and me, immediately reaching to brush his fingers down her jeans-clad calf.

“I’m not willing to take the risk right now,” Crew admits. “The only people we trust outside those in this room are Elias, Wyatt, Luca, and anyone that comes from out of town to help us.”

Bishop looks like he’s going to argue but snaps his mouth shut when Crew gives him a look. “Okay.” He sighs. “How are we going to play this?”

“We’re going to do exactly what they think we should be doing with one of us dying,” Crew says cryptically, and I can’t help but smirk.

Caleb’s about to learn he’s not the only one that can return from the dead.

CHAPTER NINE

CREW

Isent Camilla and Kovu to bed an hour ago after Elias confirmed he does in fact have a concussion, while myself, Bishop, and Kaos have stayed in my office each working on something or other.

I’ve been watching security footage Wyatt sent over from where Kovu followed Caleb and Davenport to, trying to figure out who else is working behind our back. I’m not willing to rule anyone out right now, not after today.

I’ll do anything to keep my family safe, including burn this entire organization to the ground.

Bishop yawns from where he’s sitting across from me with his laptop balancing on his knees. He’s going over some financials Wyatt managed to track down for Caleb, or at least we think they’re for him. Seeing as he’s been a ghost for the last three years, we’re not entirely sure we’ve traced him to the correct alias, but the money and timing look right, so it’s the best we’ve got right now.

Kaos is sitting on the couch in the corner on his phone, sending out messages to let everyone in our organization know that Kovu is dead. Just the thought of it still makes my stomach revolt, but I keep reminding myself that he’s just down the hall with our girl.

“You got anything?” I ask.

Bishop shakes his head. “Not yet. It’s just a whole lot of deposits up until the month he died, and then nothing for almost a year. He had to have had someone bankrolling him for all that time, but I can’t find anything to support that theory.”

“What if he had another account that he used for that first year?”

“Maybe.” He shrugs. “I can track the money until the end of the earth, but I don’t think it’s going to lead us anywhere.”

I nod and drop my elbows to my desk. “Keep looking, and if you don’t find anything tonight, we’ll put it to the side and try to nail him another way.”

Kaos unfolds himself from the couch and moves toward the desk, taking the spare seat beside Bishop. “That’s done. People are sending their condolences. Miriam and Christopher are asking what impact this is going to have on the Syndicate now that he’s gone.”

Bishop scoffs. “Of course they did.”

I rub a hand down my face. “I think it’s time we start considering what we’re going to do when this is over. Once we wipe Caleb and Charles off the face of the earth, what do we want to do?”

“Shouldn’t Kovu be here for this?” Kaos asks.

“We’re not going to make any decisions, but I want to know what you want for the future.”

“I want a life with Camilla,” Bishop says immediately. “I’ll do anything to make that happen.”

“Even give up the Syndicate?”

He nods. “Without hesitation.”

I turn to Kaos, who is already nodding his head as well. “I’m the same.”

A heavy weight rests on my chest at the thought of giving up everything we worked so hard for. I gave up everything to get to where we are now. Every scrap of humanity I possessed is long gone, but I can’t help but agree with them.

The Syndicate was everything we ever wanted, until we met her.
