At the question, my eyes lift to his and I give him a small nod before taking the spoonful of ice cream that has been frozen mid-air.

His eyebrows rise, glancing at the oven clock. “You sure? Ice cream at midnight?”

“It’s my pity party.”

Owen grabs a cup of water before leaning next to me on the counter. “A pity party for what?”

I take another bite before answering him. “I found out my boyfriend has been fucking another girl.”

He blows out a low whistle. “Damn. I’m sor?—”

“Your daughter, actually.” I give him a saccharine smile, licking off the back of the spoon as I watch his reaction. His eyes dip to my mouth for a second before he stands straighter.

“My daughter?”

“Yup. I suspected it, so I waited till she fell asleep and then went through her phone.”

He stares at me blankly.

“Found texts, but the pictures and videos… That's what really makes me sick.” I take another bite, tilting my head at him.

Letting out a small chuckle, I stab the ice cream and scoop a huge bite. “Do you think it’s because she’s a whore? Or that maybe if I was willing to fuck him more?—”

“Hey.” His deep rumble is a warning that I’m toeing the line, but I want someone to hurt along with me.

I roll my eyes, pointing the loaded spoon at him. “Maybe she gets it from you. That’s the story, right? You cheated on her mom and that’s why she kicked you out. That wou?—”

Owen knocks the spoon away from his face. It clatters onto the counter as the ice cream plops into my lap. I’m only wearing one of my dad’s large t-shirts so it slowly melts towards the divot between my bare thighs. I watch it, thinking about how sad it is to go to waste just like the last four years of my life.

“I get you’re in pain, but I’m not the one who hurt you. And I’m sorry if my daughter did that to you, no one deserves that.”

“Right,” I drawl out sarcastically.

He steps closer to me, the heat of his stomach brushing against my knees. Owen leans over, gripping the counter on either side of me and lowers his face till it’s in view from where I’m looking down. My gaze darts to his.

“I am sorry. I don’t know what lies Elise spun to you and Brit, but I never cheated on her. I would never do that to a woman I was committed to.”

We both lift our heads, but he doesn’t move back as we stare at one another. I’m suddenly aware of how close we are. Aware how I could shift my legs open, and he would probably glide in between them. I glance at his lips for a brief second.

“Do you think it was because he couldn’t make me come?”

Owen blinks, his mouth opening an inch in shock. “What?”

“Do you think my boyfriend cheated on me because he couldn’t make me come?” I repeat.

“If he couldn’t make you come, then why would you stay with him anyway?”

I smirk at that and shrug. “If I’ve never experienced it, how would I know better?”

His eyes dip to my mouth again. “What are you saying?”

“Maybe you can do me a favor and give me one,” I whisper.

He sucks in a breath, pulling back slightly. “We shouldn’t even be entertaining that idea. You’re still in college and my daughter’s best friend.”

“Right, it makes me legal, and I think it means you owe me one since your daughter broke the number one rule of friendship.”

He scoffs. “Owe you? I don’t owe you a thing.”
