She was drifting off to sleep when Alex nudged her. “Anna, you really need to have some dinner.”

“Mos’ places’re closed,” she mumbled. “‘s alright... have breakfas’ in... morning.” She couldn’t find the energy to even open her eyes.

“Nein, mein Schatz.” He sat up. “You need to eat. Tonight. Do you have any food here?”

She groaned and forced her eyes open. “Some cereal. It’s easier to pick up takeout than cook.”

Alex chuckled. “I understand. If Frau Gersten wasn’t there, I would do the same thing.” He stood and pulled his phone out of the pocket of his jacket. “Let me see what’s open.” He sat back on the bed and tapped on his phone for a few minutes while Anna stroked his leg. He absently took her hand in his and stroked the back of it. “There is a grocery store right around the corner that’s still open. It likely won’t be anything gourmet, but it will be food. And it’s faster than taking you to my place.” He looked at her. “Do you want to come with me?”

Anna chewed her lip. If she stayed, she could doze. But she didn’t want to be away from him. She sat up. “I’ll come with.”

They dressed quickly. Anna slipped on a pair of sweats and a hoodie, while Alex put on his shirt and slacks back on. “You’re a little wrinkled,” she said, running her hand down his chest.

Alex shrugged and grinned. “I don’t care. Unless you have clothes here my size, it will have to do.”

He held her hand the entire time they were out, except at the register when he needed two hands to get his credit card out of his wallet. By the time they got back to her apartment, she was yawning like crazy.

He shook his head. “I should have had you stay so you could have slept a bit. I’m sorry, Schatzi.” He chuckled as she yawned again. “Alright, you don’t have to eat. But I am going to get you a big breakfast in the morning, and you must promise me you will eat every bite.”

Anna’s heart leaped in her chest. “You’re staying the night?”

“I was planning on it,” he said slowly. “Is that alright?”

Anna grinned and nodded enthusiastically. “I would love it if you stayed.” She smiled as he turned out the lights and walked with her to her bedroom. They undressed and then he waited for her to crawl into bed before he turned out the light and joined her under the covers, pulling her against him and holding her tightly. She fell asleep immediately.

Chapter 81

Alex woke with the sun as he normally did and smiled. Last night had been one of the best of his life, and he kept his eyes closed as he relished the feel of Anna in his arms and the memory of making love to her.

Knowing he had to tell her he was going out of town weighed heavily on his heart, though. Not to mention having to tell her he was moving back to Germany for a few months. He didn’t know if it would be better to talk to her about it after she woke up and risk ruining the magic of last night, or waiting until he took her out to dinner later that night.

Had he failed her again, making love to her—bonding with her—just before he left? Maybe he could push off his move back home for a month or so after he returned from his mission, so they’d have more time together. The last thing he wanted was for her to feel abandoned.

More than ever, he wished there was another way for him to learn what he needed to fight Devin, but if he tried anything here, Devin would know and Alex would lose any advantage he might have gained from his learning. No, he had to go home. And going home meant leaving Anna. And that broke his heart.

But on the bright side, she’d come to him willingly, and that gave him hope for the future. They had a beginning. When he returned from Germany, he would court her and then ask her to marry him when she was ready. He’d be stronger and able to fight Devin and win. Then Anna would be free.
