Ethan shrugged. “Sex was involved, though I don’t exactly understand how it works. I know it
involves their Immortal essence. I guess I have a tiny bit of Immortality inside me now.” He grinned.
Sabrina relaxed.
“You didn’t do anything.” He took her hand. “Believe it or not, Sabrina, you are an amazing
woman and you don’t have to seduce a guy to make him fall for you.”
“But don’t you want to get married someday? Have a family?”
“Sabrina, when I joined the army I knew I couldn’t make the same promise to a woman and my
country. I made my choice then.”
“But you’re not in the army anymore.”
“True, but my loyalties haven’t changed. Serving Chase—what I do—I’m still protecting my
country, just differently now. I swore my allegiance to Chase and The Brotherhood.” He looked at his
watch again. “We can talk more later if you want, but for now, we need to get out there. Chase is
getting impatient.”
“How do you know?”
Ethan laughed. “Because he’s texted three times in the last five minutes wondering where we are.”
She smiled and pick up her handbag. “Okay, let’s go.”

ETHAN AND S ABRINA MADE THEIR WAY TO THE FRONT OF THE OPERA HOUSE. WHEN ETHAN OPENED THE
side door to the lobby, she froze. “Oh! It’s beautiful!”
What had been an open, luxurious space was now transformed into a sparkling wonderland
worthy of the magic of The Nutcracker. Tables filled the area, covered in white linens, fine china,
and tall silver vases overflowing with white flowers. The crystal chandeliers were dimmed, allowing
thousands of tiny lights to sparkle around and above the massive room, making Sabrina feel as if she
were standing among the stars.
Men in custom-fitted tuxedos and women in elegant dresses, adorned in jewels worth more than
Sabrina could imagine, mingled around the room. A string quartet played Mozart from the stage set up
in front of a wooden dance floor.
Sabrina took a breath and Ethan squeezed her hand.
“You okay?” he asked.
She glanced up at him and saw the encouragement in his eyes. Her chest filled with warmth,
