will give you the power to defeat the Ancient One.”
Chase ran his hands through his hair and leaned forward. He looked at Richard. “How can you be
okay with this?”
Richard smiled. “You are one of the finest men I know, Chase. The others know you. We have no
reservations.”
“Even Alex had to partake in the Immortal essence to beat Devin,” Wilhelm added.
That was true. “Would it be like that?” Chase asked.
“No. It would be a full Elder ceremony.”
A full Elder ceremony. They trusted him to make him more powerful than all of them combined.
“It will give us the best chance?” he asked.
The men nodded.
Chase inhaled deeply and stood. “Can I have a few minutes to wrap my head around all this?”
Richard nodded. “But don’t take too long. There are preparations to be made.”
Chase walked out into the clean night air. He wandered to the edge of the barrier and looked up at
the stars, twinkling in the black sky. He searched for the big and little dippers and found them
overhead. They really did look like diamonds on velvet. How easily he forgot when he was in the
city.
He looked back down into the darkness of the trees ahead of him and inhaled deeply. Was he
worthy of the power the Elders wanted to give him? He’d always tried to do the right thing. To be a
good man. But was he ready for this? Could he do what they thought he could do?
He fisted his hands. He wanted revenge on Damian. He wanted Sabrina back. He wanted Ethan
back. Defeating Damian wouldn’t bring Ethan back, but it could bring Sabrina back to him.
He closed his eyes and let images of his beloved Sabrina dance in his mind. Her dancing. Her
sparkling green eyes when he asked her to marry him. Her breathtaking beauty on their wedding day.
His heart longed for her presence. He wanted to hold her again. To hear her say, “I love you.” To see
her smile.
Yes, he wanted to do whatever he could to prevent Damian from fulfilling his plans and
destroying everything good in the world. But more than that, he wanted his Sabrina back. He wanted
her by his side. Safe and away from the influence of Damian. He never wanted to see fear in her eyes
ever again. His heart ached for her.
